About
The wonderful world of the Renaissance The provincial sovereign of Tyrol, Archduke Ferdinand II (1529-95), son of Emperor Ferdinand l, ordered that the mediaeval fortress at Ambras be turned into a Renaissance castle for his wife Philippine Welser. He also commissioned the building of a separately designed museum complex to house his world-famous collections. Constructed according to the most advanced ideas of its time, it is an eminent precursor of our modern-day museums and has been preserved at its original site to this day. The armouries comprise rare examples of 15th century jousting armour from the collections of Emperor Maximilian I, suits of armour of famous 16th century commanders, the Archduke’s private armour, the armour of the court of Innsbruck, and weapons from the Thirty Years’ War.

It looks picture perfact - and it actually is!
It looks really well maintained from the outside and so pretty. As you walk through the nicely laid out garden you may spot both and ordinary peacock and an albino peacock - they certainly made enough noise!
Inside the castle, which is really just a museum, there are lots of different types of exhibits, murals, paintings, an armoury, etc.
Overall, well worth a visit.

At first we were a bit lost with the castle's main entry as it is not very clear. Then when we went inside the museum has wonderful amazing and fantastic artifacts, discoveries and weird items. All so amazing to look at and spend some time wondering around the castle. We saw a gigantic warrior armor which really struck me with his height(almost 2 meters). Chinese wood work, Persian items and weaponry. We were so lucky to have had the chance to go and check these items around. We enjoyed a run in the garden of the castle and we dreamed a bit looking at their lake. Highly recommended place to visit.

Very beautiful castle with a huge exhibition. Unfortunately, portraits and pictures of people we don't know at all dominate large parts of the rooms. The building is great. The tickets are valid for the whole day and you can leave the exhibition and head to the café. The free park is great.

Very beautiful castle with a garden and various exhibitions. The highlights are the armor and the precious items collection. There is also the beautiful Spanish Hall. The upper part of the castle was unfortunately closed for renovation, but it was still absolutely worth it. We took an audio guide and can highly recommend it. The castle is a bit away from the old town. If you arrive by car, there are probably not enough (paid) parking spaces in the high season. In February there were enough free parking spaces.

This is a pearl of Innsbruck. Located on the hill above the city. One of the most tourist-worthy places in Tyrol in a good sense. Good connection via public transportation or take a taxi. We always prefer to walk. Great collection of art. Portrait gallery is famous. Rich Habsburgs collected medieval art, Lucas Cranach, Peter Paul Rubens, Anthonis van Dyck and Diego Velásquez and many other masterpieces.

For a rainy day we decided to go and visit Schloss Ambras, it turned out to be a good choice! Our children really liked the gardens and the knightsarmer. We enjoyed the paintings and the wonders cabinet. The staff was very friendly and also with the Covid rules this place is good to go and see all the art that is to enjoy. Busstop is nearby and children under 18 can go for free.

Schloss Ambras is the royal palace of the Habsburg royal family in Innsbruck. It is located on a mountain and can be reached by bus. The palace has been converted into a museum, with many military collection facilities and oil paintings introducing the Habsburg royal family. The palace has a large garden with excellent views since it is on a hill.

residence of Archduke Ferdinand II of Habsburg, an addicted collector who loved objects of any nature and size. It was not just an imperial residence but a real prototype of a museum where huge collections of unique objects and objects could be exhibited to friends and clients and we are at the end of the 15th century. Don't miss the gardens with blue peacocks and the Bacchus' cave

With our young children, they weren't equally interested in everything, so it wasn't much of a match. In particular, the upper floors with portraits were not looped. But the rest wasn't too bad. Beautiful garden too, just a pity that the rain played tricks on us.

Although the upper part of the castle could not be visited due to renovations, a visit is well worth it. Our guide from Innsbruck had a lot to tell us. The gardens are also impressive. We were also delighted to see the peacocks roaming freely. It's a shame they didn't feel like riding the bike!

Is the cost of parking at the Schloss included in the Innsbruck City Card? Also, about how long would it take to see the castle and grounds?

Salve

Buona visita!

Dear Riddlemaster95,
thank you for your question! In general it is allowed to take photos in the whole castle, but please do not use a tripot or take pictures with flash.
Throughout special exhibitions some objects are not allowed to photograph, but these are marked.
I hope you enjoy the visit!
Best wishes
Anna

Hi,
Paid parking is available on the site. Use the parking ticket.
Its unfortunate that even at some remote places the parking is not free.
Hope this helps.
