Though it was early and before season with rain showers and frosty weather, this city never loses it's charm. Unfortunately there are just too many tourists and the charm of old Salzburg is dying. Mostly designer shops and over priced stuff.

We took the train into Salzburg on Friday evening after skiing, along with every Austrian under 25. Must have been something on but we never found out what. I don't think they were going to the Mozart concert at the Mìrabellenschloß. I rather fancied it but it might have been difficult to get the train back afterwards. So we wandered... More

Salzburg is a famous city because of Mozart. But in fact It became rich because of the sold that was found here. Governed by powerful bishops, It florished. The Bishops built extremely beautiful churches and other buildings. The city got its fortress and the beautiful Mirabell Garden. Between It, many Gassen, narrow roads, now reserved for pedestrians, offer a phantastic... More

Salzburg is a beautiful city with the influence of middle age. We were there on xmass eve, joind the mass in the cathedral which was really impressive. Walking in the streets of this old city is really nice. We also visited xmass market. We tried Glühwein, typical food and apple strudel.

A warren of cobblestone streets and narrow alleyways and arcades all filled with shops, cafes and restaurants, the old town is a fascinating place to spend a day exploring. The shops on the main pedestrian thoroughfare have these wonderful metal signs out front and are very picturesque. There seems to be an inordinate number of churches for the size of... More

Travelled by train from Munich......2 hour journey thro' wonderful countryside. The Old Town is a good 30min walk from station along the Salzach River and affords some great views of the Old Town skyline. Various historical sites to visit within a small area so you can imagine how busy it can get..........a popular tourist town so be prepared. This aside... More

Salzburg shouldn't disappoint - a historic city in a great natural setting with some fine buildings, cultural heritage, and a lot to see - but I couldn't take to it. It was overrun with tourists even in this, the quiet season, and was determined to take advantage of them. Shops and stalls aimed at the tourist trade, high-prices all round,... More

For a visit of historical old town you need only one afternoon, everything is very close, but it's really worth to visit (must see Getreide Strasse, Salzburger Dom... ). We have been here on Saturday in April and were suprised, that the old town was NOT overcrowded by the tourists
