All are worth seeing and except the catacombs are all free. Pay the 2 Euro per person and walk up the stairs to see the church carved into the cliff face.Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 24 September 2023
- Ginges_revengeBrisbane, Australia5,859 contributionsBeautiful little cemetery. .This cemetery was amazing. There are a few entrances to get into it. The cemetery is loving kept and has an amazing garden through it. It is lovely and quiet and was an amazing place just to have a quiet walk through. It was one of my favourite places to see when I was in Salzburg old town. It is underneath the catacombs and the entrance is in the cemetery.Visited March 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 December 2023
- rosietomato155 contributionsFor the cemetary fansWhen you are in the main square you will see a sign to the catacombs. Follow it to find the St. Peters Cemetery. I always try to visit cemeteries wherever I go and this one is delightful. Very different from the traditional cemeteries as each grave has flowers and permanent plantings. I wish I had more time to spend but it was so easy to get to I made sure to visit.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 25 December 2023
- elawson634 contributionsOur favorite thing in SalzburgWe were looking for the funicular ticket box when we stumbled across this area. It was so interesting to see how other cultures organize and decorate their cemeteries. I also recommend going in the catacombs. It's only a few minutes (but a lot of stairs!!) but the views from the inside of the catacombs into old Salzburg are wonderful. And its also a great way to escape the crowds.Visited December 2023Travelled with familyWritten 5 January 2024

- AK8397Ontario, Canada1,018 contributionsTranquil spotThis peaceful, historic cemetery is a bit off the beaten path, but it is worth a look. It is very well-maintained and ornate. As you may know, the movie "The Sound of Music" was set in Salzburg and many locations around the town were used for filming different scenes. Our guide told us that this cemetery was used at the end of the movie for the scene where the von Trapp family was hiding from the Nazis before making their escape into the mountains. A bit has changed in the cemetery in the 60 years since that movie was made, but it is interesting to see this place. If you like the movie, check out this location.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 10 June 2024

It is the oldest cemetery in Salzburg, and the oldest tombstone dates from 1288. You can see burials of local architects, mayors, painters, opera singers, poets and historians. Came here with my wife - a Sound of Music fan. The cemetery is quaint and historic, but for us it was worth about 10 minutes stop. Much of the movie scene was filmed on a set so not exactly as you find it (which is the case with most film locations anyways).

This is a great place to walk and visit. However, both for its beauty and notoriety from the Sound of Music, it is a little more crowded. I will say with the flowers and monuments it may be the prettiest cemetery. In addition you can visit the catacombs that have been cut into the mountain behind and get a good view of the cemetery.
It is one of those places you have to visit and you easily can walk through. Take the time to visit.

Towards the end of 'The Sound of Music', the Von Trapp family hid behind the tombstones in the Petersfriedhof cloisters. This is an incredible place to wander in to: there are 3 beautiful chapels to visit, along with the Catacombs hewn in to the rock face, as well as the many graves which include that of the composer, Haydn. It's also free admission with the exception of the Catacombs which cost a very reasonable 2 euros to get in to. There are several ways in, but don't be put off by the unexciting exterior: this is a real gem and worth every minute you might spend here.

The plots were so well maintained and decorated. Just amazing to see. There was a place to go up to see Catacombs which we did . But this was a bit of a waste of time as it was a very steep set of stairs and at the top it was just 2 plots. We had thought it was going to be like the Catacombs in Paris with many many skulls but this was definetly not like that.

We were told this was where some of The Sound of Music was filmed (it wasn’t but it’s design was used to make the set). Really interesting reading headstones. Mozart’s wife and children buried here. If you want a bit of quiet this is a good place to go.

If you come earlier you can attend Latin Mass at the church. Beautiful place and tranquillity throughout. Mozart’s mother’s grave is there. Beautiful sculptures and grace of a time long past. Really beautiful.
