This was not my first concentration camp visit and yet no matter how much you prepare yourself it is always a shock. It is poignant and horrifying. The room of names left me in tears. As awful as this place is, it is important to...More

It really was worth the ride from Wien. It was the first concentration camp I ever visited, and it really has an effect on you. The entrance is free and the audioguide was 3€ (take it, it explains in detail every space in the camp)....More

The memorial is wonderfully set up and maintained. While certainly not a fun experience, I'm very glad I was able to go and am very thankful this site is kept up. There are some very intense moments. The walking tour audio is inexpensive (3€ apiece)...More

This is about two hours away from Vienna and well worth the adventure. Keep in mind the stairs of death are not open during the winter. The tour takes about 2-2 1/2 hours.

The former concentration camp is very good renovated. As a result the barracks seem not as bad as they definitely war in World War II. The museum is very interesting. Entrance is free. Outside the camp there are several monuments to remember the victims of...More

Have been to Dachau and to Auschwitz. I feel it is important to see places like this. So we went here as well while recently vacationing in Austria. There is always something more to learn. Each is different and just as moving. We didn't go...More

What is the best place to stay when visiting Mauthausen - say for a 3/4 day break - I understand it is not easy to get to and there are no flights to Linz from Manchester so would staying in Vienna or Munich or Prague for example be the best idea then taking a day trip to the camp - please advise - thanks

I just rented a car from Vienna and drove there. It is not too long and it can be done in one day easily.

5 of us will be in Linz as a day stop on a river cruise. We are interested in a private tour guide to drive us from Linz to Mauthausen and then provide private tour of the memorial if possible. We do realize we can take the bus and then the audio tour provided at the memorial but thought a guide with transportation would be more efficient use of our time. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I strongly recommend you to rent a car or go there by bus, since you'd pay a huge amount of money for a guide while the audio guide is soooo great and costs only 3€. It gives you all kind of details that I don't think a... More
