It is not a touristic place. It is a historical, memorial and necessary place. I cannot say "I loved it" because it is not a place to love. It is a place to visit, think and make reflections about who we are, what we did and why the world is like that today. We need these places to remind us... More

This was the first concentration camp that I had ever visited. We used the audio guide which I recommend because it explains all areas of the camp very completely & thoroughly. This is history that is very hard to see and understand, but the story must be told. Mauthausen Memorial tells the story very well--from the barracks and camp areas,... More

This was not my first concentration camp visit and yet no matter how much you prepare yourself it is always a shock. It is poignant and horrifying. The room of names left me in tears. As awful as this place is, it is important to see. Getting to Mauthausen from Vienna is not easy. You will need to take a... More

It really was worth the ride from Wien. It was the first concentration camp I ever visited, and it really has an effect on you. The entrance is free and the audioguide was 3€ (take it, it explains in detail every space in the camp). The tour took you into the spaces where the prisoners where kept, and explains every... More

The memorial is wonderfully set up and maintained. While certainly not a fun experience, I'm very glad I was able to go and am very thankful this site is kept up. There are some very intense moments. The walking tour audio is inexpensive (3€ apiece) and worth it. The museum is also very powerful. About the travel. We came from... More

This is about two hours away from Vienna and well worth the adventure. Keep in mind the stairs of death are not open during the winter. The tour takes about 2-2 1/2 hours.

The other day,I visited this excellent memorial to the many people who were tortured and/or died at the Mauthausen Concentration Camp from 1938 to 1945.I saw the "Stairs of Death",the gas chambers, the crematoria,Block 20,and the other areas of this concentration camp located in a remote area about 25 miles from Linz.I listened to the firsthand accounts of the survivors of... Its a little difficult to get there, but it is totally worth it, a unique experience, we went by train from Vienna, and I got a taxi there.
