Essl Modern Art Museum, Klosterneuburg, is closing down for good on 1st July 2016. It is easily reached from Vienna by a frequent local bus service just outside Heiligenstadt or by Schnellbahn towards Klosterneuburg. I visited the Essl Museum in May 2016 expecting to be bored, but just because it was closing down soon. Once inside the rather boring exterior... More

The museum is nicely reachable with a 30 minutes public transportation ride from the city center of Vienna and provides nice exhibitions on contemporary art. A good option to make on a rainy day. Check the exhibitions on their website before going there. The museum is relatively small - can be "made" within an hour. Things to improve: Payment is... More

Combine it with sightseeing: klosterneuburg church, nussdorf Danube ship ride, nussdorf wine heuriger visit, also a very bicycle friendly route from Vienna

This is basically a private art collection in a museum space. It consists of 2 parts - German art post 1960 and aboriginal art. There is no information in English - in fact they seemed surprised to see us there. There are some lovely pieces in the German art section and a few that seemed amateurish (just not our taste)... It would be a shame to miss this if you are in Vienna and have any interest in fine art. For 9 euros regular price or 6 euros reduced rate, e.g. for seniors, you can take a shuttle bus that is included in the ticket price from the Albertina to Klosterneuburg. The bus leaves on the even hours from 10... More

The Essl Museum is near Vienna, on a strange, abandoned-looking site in Klosterneuburg. The modern building is remarkable rather than great, but the surroundings do not do any favour to it. Once inside, you have to fork out what is a little excessive entrance fee, possibly set by the cubic meter of space you are going to visit. We saw... More

So it depends when you go. Focus is on Austrian modern art, presented in a beautiful museum. Nice cafe on top.

Regulars to the Essl on each visit to Vienna, it has a free bus from behind the StaatsOper every two hours or by D tram or A4 U-bahn to Heiligenstadt and a bus to Klosterneuberg, LeopoldBr. Currently exhibitions Alex Katz, Xenia Hauser and New York, New York. As usual, very quiet so we could walk around and enjoy the art.... More

We got there around 7 p.m. (it is free on Wednesday nights from 6 to 9 p.m.) and it’s a massive building, but the only art is on the 2nd floor. It was awesome. Each room had anywhere from one to five pieces of art by Anselm Kiefer, the current exhibition. Most of his works are massive canvasses that take... More
