Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We were a group of travellers from Canada, and visited this attraction while on a day trip to Famagusta. This castle is professed to be the inspiration for Shakespeare's Othello. We could not gain admittance, but stood at the walkways at the walled city. Incredible scenic views of the harbour from our viewing spot.

Access to this is very easy and only a short strole from the old town centre. Quite easy to climb with safe steps. If you have reached this you will have read the history at least in part. The views from the top over the old town are one of the best - look at all the derelict churches. Views over the harbour and North towards Salamis and Karpas are good in clear weather. Southwards you can see into the derelict secure zone with buildings in quite a forlorn state. Well worth the visit.

Famagusta is mainly free and tbh the pics from the castle are limited and although 9 Turkish Lira entry the it isn't worth it. Not much to see and spoiled by the main area set up for a show.
Take pics from the outside as you are on same level. Don't pay € as more expensive.
Lots of other history to see

You have to visit the old part of the city/museum/cathedral/city walls/bazaars.....interesting! You can do this on your own but I would suggest to join a group or take a guide so not to miss the antique tresures of this famous city.

Shakespear wrote his play Othello based on old mythology from this castle. He never visited but he learnt about the tale and wrote the play, hence there is a statue of him outside the castle. It must of been quiet a place in its time and we found it interesting.

Not sure how much it was worth the effort of driving from Kyrenia to see the sites of Famagusta .... in fact there isn’t much to see
Ok walking round the old walled castle was ( I suppose ) faintly interesting ...I was trying hard to be positive —-9TL plus a tip
The views over the commercial port and warehouses are underwhelming
We walked over to the hop on bus but he wasn’t going anywhere!!!
We were!! — back to Kyrenia past hundreds of half finished abandoned apartment blocks and rows of razor wire fencing
I’ve seen some dumps in my life but this takes the biscuit
Before we left we had a brief walk round the town dodging the waiters and peering into the shops but we have enough watches handbags and fridge magnets to last a lifetime.
Don’t waste your time — there are better things to do in northern Cyprus....I just can’t think of any at the moment!
It was Friday prayers and for the first time ever I went into the mosque and sat quietly and respectfully at the back watching the people come and go
Now that WAS fascinating!

Famagusta in turkish Gazimagusa is the biggest port in Cyprus which caused the prosperity of the city during the history.
Venetian walls are 3 km long and have 15 bastions and castle where lived the Governor of Cyprus Christoforo Moro in 1505 and inspired Shakespeare to write drama Othello

This is a really well conserved building with a really fascinating history and a link to Shakespeare. It was interesting to see the role of the EU in its conservation and to see what a good job had been made. It was also nice to see some historical explanation of the building and its development which is often missing in Northern Cyprus
