Visible from far and wide yet so close you could almost touch it, the emblem of Liechtenstein towers over Vaduz on a rock terrace which can be reached along a romantic footpath. The castle was first built some 700 years ago. Since 1712 it has been in the possession of the Prince of Liechtenstein. Furthermore, since 1938 it has been the residence of the prince’s family, so it is not open to the public. The 12th century keep and the structures on the east side are the oldest parts of the castle.

To be realistic the best place to see the palace is from the city unless you are invited. Once tried to see something but behind gates and walls there is little to see.

Checked this off the bucket list! Fantastic views overlooking Liechtenstein! Would love to be able to see inside the castle, but was happy to walk around the outside and take photos. There are fields of friendly cows with the traditional bells around their necks. Perfect...More

The royal family was in residence when we visited Vaduz, that we knew because the Liechtenstein flag was flying from the castle wall, but aside from a fantastic vantage point pointed out by our tour leader, that is as close as we could get. Mind...More

This is the private residence of the Prince and not open to public. The walk up the hill however is scenic and panoramic once you get to the top. From the view point to the castle entrance proper is a very beautiful meadow and beautiful...More

It’s a sweet castle in a prime location looking over the town of Vaduz. But the royals of Liechtenstein are still living inside. So no one is allowed on the premises. There is parking 100-200 meters from the castle, so you can get a close...More

We stopped in Vaduz during our drive through Eastern Switzerland and were disappointed to find little of interest to do or see. Vaduz Castle is the only significant sight, but it is not open to visit.

Especially when the Prince of the country lives in it! Great views. - Path/Road entrance is just to the left of the Burg Bar. - The initial path/Road is VERY steep. Take your time. It gets easier. Signs will lead the way. - In case...More

It is never open to the public, although once a year, 15th of August, during the national holiday there’s a party in the gardens (this is what I was told).
