Grund is located in the valley below the centre of Luxembourg City, it is nestled on the Alzette River and is incredibly picturesque with its charming architecture and beautiful backdrop. It is a nice place to stroll and also ideal for photo opportunities. There are many landmarks at Grund including Neumünster Abbey, Casemates du Bock as well as many other sights which are squeezed into a relatively small area. We walked from Gare Centrale to Grund and then took the public lift up to Ville-Haute which took a few minutes and is very accessible. It is a very attractive area of Luxembourg City and well worth exploring.

Walking through Grund felt like stepping into another era. What I loved most were the historic buildings and narrow, cobblestone paths that wind through this picturesque district. The architecture tells the story of centuries past, with each building exuding character and charm. It’s easy to get lost in the quiet, meandering streets, imagining the history that has unfolded here.

The contrast between the ancient structures and the natural beauty surrounding them makes Grund feel like a true escape from the modern world. If you enjoy exploring historic sites and walking through time, Grund is a must-visit!

Tip: Make sure to explore in the late afternoon, when the light enhances the beauty of the old stone buildings.

The overall walk in the Grund district is quite substantial given the size of the city... In my opinion, this is the only essential activity to do as the rest is not necessarily interesting. You have to go up and around the top until you reach the cathedral then go to the Rocher du Bock where a panoramic view will delight more than one and go through the Casemates tunnel and take a stroll in the lower part of the district.
It's exotic, calm - unlike other parts of the city. To return to the city, an elevator awaits you at the end of the route to avoid going up the slopes which can be tiring.

A great place to visit when staying in Luxembourg City!
We went down one of the many steep paths (or just take the lift) and we walked along the valley to GRUND, which feels like a completely different village surrounded by cliffs and the city above, with a very picturesque bridge and centre.
There is a small museum with dinosaurs, a pretty church, several bars and places to eat… TWO Michelin star restaurants, a cosy pub and a lively bar - it was a lovely place to visit during the day and a surprisingly great place to go on Saturday night
The lift stays open until 4am, there’s also a free bus

Drop down here via one of the two lifts from the Royal City above and it is like a completely different place. Nice to just walk around visiting any of the lovely building that are open. Good places to eat or refresh. As has been said the (free) 23 bus goes from one end to the other - use it as a hop on hop off. We visited in December but I know from the past that a river walk in summer is lovely.

Grund is a historic neighborhood in downtown Luxembourg. The row of waterside houses and alleys is now a popular tourist attraction. It looks as if time stops at the medieval age. A stroll around the area is pleasurable.

Grund is the old town of Luxembourg City located along the banks of the Alzette River.
It is a great place to walk around (day and night) and enjoy the beautiful landscapes, its unique architecture and the beautiful bridges.
Not to miss, the Abbey of NeumĂĽnster (cultural center) and Eglise Saint-Jean-de-Grund.

District located below the upper town, located within the river. Beautiful views of the upper city, the city's art venue with exhibitors of all kinds.

Cute, quiet and romantic neighborhood. It feels like a small village even though we are in the middle of the city.

Allow 1 hour to go down, visit, take some distance to contemplate the city and its fortifications and go back up, of course.

Many areas in Luxembourg has many sunken areas and some above others. It is truly unusual especially in the city. It makes for an interesting and unusual. place. The Grund is one of these areas. It is like a fairytale district with gorgeous views flanked by nature and the Alzette River. It is in the heart of an old fortress and is a UNESCO site. The Grund is calmer and quieter than areas nearby. It is truly worth a visit.

I was enthralled with Luxembourg City and the Grund was idyllically pretty. Maybe my favorite part of the city, though I may have more than one favorite place. Really really lovely, quiet waterside area of town. Take time to savor the beauty and ambience as you indulge in cafe-hoppin. Not to be missed.
