Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

Beautiful place and drive to stunning Saksun but what a strange feeling that you have to pay 75dkk to visit the beautiful beach. Totally destroyed my experience. Tourists are not really welcome. Even though it's gorgeous I wouldn't recommend it due to the fact that the nature experience is based on money. Weird feeling there

As some other reviewers said: The place itself is beautiful, but tourists are not welcome there. Walking up the waterfall I got lost on the path due to rainy conditions (was about 50m off the path) and when I walked down the owner stopped me and was extremely rude, shouting f-words at me even when I appologized and tried to explain that I just lost the path. It was like he really wanted to express, that tourists are not welcome there. I've been to more than 40 countries and never met worse person while travelling.

Wanted to see the famous Saksun Church, after nice ride along the narrow road through the valley. But after parking made a mistake of stepping on the grass just a bit to take a picture of the church (which is behind locked gates and tens of "do not trespass" signs), and were approached by man on the quad to be asked why am I stepping on his grass and told that I am the fu****** tourist. So, if you drive 11km from the main road to see this nice looking church, beware, as you will not be able to actually see the church close by or even from the inside, but also beware of stepping on the private grass. Unbelievable.

Oh my goodness, Saksun is one of the absolute most gorgeous places on our planet. But reports about an aggressive angry local are true. I thought I was standing in an allowed area when he came barreling towards me. Cussing, yelling and asking why I thought I was so $%@# special. I had no idea what he was talking about but apologized profusely and asked what the problem was. There were signs that I thought meant “Keep Off the Grass” but they actually meant do not walk on this path. There had been no rope or cones or anything blocking the path. He was filled with so much rage and scared me so badly that I immediately left, shaking. The Faroe Islands are home to some of the absolute nicest people. Absolutely go. But I would just tread very very very carefully if you go to Saksun.

Quaint and simple in the midst of such stunning natural background. Its your typical thatched roof simple and small building. But the natural beauty of its location makes it stand out. There is also a small graveyard behind the church.

Saksun is beautiful. The drive in is stunning. The reason I am giving it 1 star is that you now have to pay to walk on the beach. I just want people to be aware of this as it is very new. I don’t really problem with this, the Faroe Islands is not my country, I am a visitor. However, due to the influx of Instagrammers and people who trample all over to get the “Instagram worthy” photo, locals have become upset and feel their privacy is being invaded. The fee is 75 DKK, there is a credit card reader and robust gate/turnstile to pass through. The tide schedule is posted and I would recommend going only at low tide.
The credit card reader is VERY finicky and a few people were charged twice for a transaction. There is no clear indication who owns the gate/card reader, or to get any help (it’s not the government) so be prepared to dispute credit card charges with your card issuer if you are charged multiple times.

You might go to a party in a beautiful house with great food, but if you don't feel welcome, it's just not that great... that's how visiting Saksun feels!

Everybody comes, hoping to see that cute little house, but instead find that everything is fenced in. Searching for a way down to the house, we came to the property of the owner who shouted at some asian tourists, who went a bit too far.

I managed to have a talk with the angry man, who calmed down and explained their problem with tourists. I told him that a sign explaining that there is no way to get down to that house, would probably ease their pain. But apparently the local tourist authorities are hesitant with assistance to the inhabitants of Saksun...

So, to give these people the peace and quiet they want and deserve, I give Saksun one star. Just leave them alone. There are many, much better sights on these Islands!

An incredibly picturesque village at the end of one of the buttercup routes.
So what is the catch here?

Barbed wires, threatening signs and of course the very famous Hi-Fee (© Føroyar) enforced by the combination of a high fence, cameras and a guy with a watchdog patrolling the area, just to name a few.
(If you’re for some reason curious about that, the price here is 75 DKK per head to be able to walk 300 m around the lagoon. And they even lie to those without maps/phones/eyes that the trip will be 3 km long. Like, come on..)

What the heck? Have you ever seen anything like this anywhere else in the world? (Other places in the Faroe Islands do not count, mind you.) No? Well, me neither. And I hope that I won’t see it again. Ever.
You know what, dear Saksun residents? Just close the buttercup road at its very beginning in Hvalvík for everyone except you, the four people living there, and with those fools incoming on foot just deal with your barbed hospitality.
Problem solved.

I was saddened to learn that this " attraction" is placed innthe middle of a farmers land. And that the 8 people living there are completely run over by tourists. The only public area in the village is the paved road. Walking anywhere else is actually illegal trespassing.

I was wondering how this place presented itself. The night before I literally dreamt of locals defending their place with kind of an iron curtain, as I was reading all this stuff about "no more tourists trespassing the fence...."
Clearly, the place is serene, wonderfully located. I was there alone, not one other person, in heavy November rain. As I was there with my Leica, I wanted to take a few pictures. I quickly realized that the most beautiful spots were fenced off. But I understood. The grassland is wet, marshland - like, and it would quickly look destroyed, if coach loadings (there are coach parking spaces....) would be admitted. The only question I have: Why is it left to the locals to put unfriendly aggressive signs, instead of a clear admin warning post?? It would be so easy to explain to the public why is done what....
