On this trip, we just stopped at the cave at the same level as the road. Worth the quick 15 minute stop to get back here. On a previous trip, we hiked to the top to the viking burial site and it was well worth...More

I'm really into graveyards and the like, so this was a must do for me. It's a pretty steep hike to the top where the burial mound is, but the views are WELL worth it! We pretty much had the place to ourselves and it...More

It would appear that there are two places called Hjorleifshofoi. I am writing about the cave which is on the south coast and not too far from Vik. We spotted this on google maps and came off Route 1 to visit. It was rather thrilling...More

Not many people turn off to visit this pretty site on the South coast. It is a fairly long drive off the main road (1 to 2 km) to the start point of a sign posted walk. When we visited the weather wasn’t great, so...More

A nice walk through the rough Icelandic landscape brings you to a great view on the zurrounding beaches and ocean. Continue to see the remainders of an old farm. We did not encounter 1 person on the 2 hrs we spent here.

So many Ring Road travelers whiz past this place without realizing it's there. Such a mistake! The cave and surrounding beach are very pretty and far less crowded than other sights in the area—and it's free! That's a rare trifecta in Iceland these days.

Really cool history, this is the sight of the second settler of Iceland, a Viking who was killed by his Irish slaves. It is said that the caves below are haunted. Beautiful views, and far fewer tourists than other sites in the area.
