Camping at Bjarteyjarsandur
Jun. 2021 • Friends
On our way to the Glymur Waterfall we camped at the Bjarteyjarsandur campsite and it was the best decision. The campsite is on a local farm and you’ll be instantly greeted by all the animals - they are friendly! The common area (1700 ISK per person) offers a kitchen. There is also a bathroom and shower which are clean well kept. There is a grill on the campground just remember to turn the gas off after! Host was very friendly and welcoming. Highly recommend

A Welcoming and Relaxing Campsite
Jul. 2019 • Couples
While Cycling around Iceland we decided rather than getting a bus through the tunnel north of Reykjavík (one of two tunnels that bicycles aren’t allowed through) we decided to cycle around the fjord. At the end of the fjord is the Glymur waterfall so well worth the detour and if you’re cycling there are few cars this way so you can enjoy the scenery.
Coming back along the North Shore of the fjord, Google Maps claims this is ‘mostly flat’.... Google Maps you are a bad liar. It has very long hills so when we happened upon Bjarteyjarsandsvegur we were over-joyed. The cooking and eating area were relaxing with a small shop where we refuelled with homemade cookies.
The staff there were very kind and really welcoming.
The camping area is big with access for cars or on foot. There is a nice spot in the top corner with a picnic bench so if you can nab it do so. The rest of the edges are sheltered by trees which take the bite out of the winds in Iceland and are perfect for washing lines.
The shower and toilet facilities are clean and right next to the camping.
A working farm there are animals everywhere and the sheep dogs are so wonderfully friendly.
Easy to find, easy to get to and at around £20 the camping is well priced.

The coolest surprise and best night of our entire trip
Aug. 2019
We randomly decided to stop at this farm/campsite for the night on our camper van ring road trip and were so surprised to find a hidden gem like this. For campers the bathroom and shower was very clean, and the kitchen/common room area was amazing and unlike any you'll find in Iceland. The hosts are so kind and hospital, serving us food well after their kitchen had closed. It was the best seafood soup in all of Iceland, believe me I did my hands on research! That night we sat in on an acoustic concert with some locals and other travelers and had some of the best homemade rhubarb I've ever had. Everything they make on the farm and sell there is delicious, already wishing we had bought more. A true high point on an already legendary vacation.

Awesome place! Feels like home.

This is a family farm with dogs, horses, sheep etc. They have bathroom/showers available 24/7, a campers kitchen, cafe/lounge, food/drink for sale. We were adopted by a couple of the dogs and one had to be held back from following us when we left. They are well positioned for hiking Glymur falls as an evening or morning adventure. LOVE this place!

great place
Jun. 2019 • Family
The only problem we had was that our children didn't want to leave. Amazing surroundings, accommodations and hospitality. Kids loved all the free range animals and became pretty free range themselves. The soccer pitch was a hit. The dogs were great, the people were great, the view was great, the food was great, the beach was great. The even helped us with a great room in the old farmhouse when we our family really needed a night out of our van for a reasonable cost. We are from Ohio, so a farm visit wasn't really high on the list of things to do, but it ended up being everyone's favorite place. Wish there were laundry facilities, but that was a constant challenge in Iceland.

A wonderful surprise !
Jun. 2019 • Couples
We needed a camping about 1h north from Reykjavík, after having visited 3 different campsites (every time worse...) we drove along this camping where we stopped to ask if they had showers. The girl was very nice and showed us around, there is a super nice and warm common room with tables, a kitchen and a restaurant where they propose local lamb dishes for good prices ! You can also buy local homemade products such as raspberry jam, smoked lamb, sirop...
we ate very well and the WC and shower (only one but there aren’t many people in the campsite) are warmed and clean. We would recommend anyone to stop here !

Very accommodating
May 2019 • Couples
We had arrived a little late in the day but the staff here was incredibly accommodating with our schedules. They made us the most amazing lamb BBQ, probably the best meal I had in Iceland, and allowed us to tour the farm after hours. The room we stayed in was very quaint and lovely.

Must stay
Apr. 2019 • Couples
We stayed at this place for 1 night with our camper. It’s not on the main road when you’re heading north Iceland, but definitely worth the extra few kilometers to enjoy a night at friendly farm. The common area offers kitchen, showers and toilets were clean. Would highly recommend

One of the best All-year options
Oct. 2018 • Couples
We visited in late October/early November on a Ring Road trip that lasted 10 days. This was our second night in the country, following Reykjavik campsite. It was an amazing last-minute find that ended up being one of our favorite year-round campsites along the ring road (which I list below), our final verdict is as follows:

Pros:
-warm kitchen/dining/common area. it feels so homey and warm, especially when the family actually eats their own dinner at a table next to you. they have pots and other basics for you to use. make sure to clean up.
-great (But small) bathroom; 2 stalls and a stall/shower combo with lockable door, as well as two sinks. it's a small operation and, despite there being 3 other campervans with us that night, we never bumped into another traveler. you can access the bathroom from the side door after hours, so we just camped right there. the closest walk from van to bathroom on our trip!
-that VIEW.... behind you, snow covered mountains. in front, a wide bay. it is stunning in the morning, especially with the friendly dogs running around.

Cons:
-not a single thing we can say against this place. great option for your drive between Reyk and Snaefellsness Peninsula or your trek north past Borgarnes toward Akureyri.

Side note: when you enter the main lodge, take off your shoes as if you were home! They don't explicitly tell you to, but they appreciate it...

For reference, we also stayed at these sites (which are the only year-round sites opened, so let this be a help when planning your own routes):
-Reykjavik Campsite (3/5 stars)
-Bjarteyjasandur family farm (5/5 stars)
-Hamrar (Akureyri) (4/5 stars)
-Vogar (Myvatn area) (4/5 stars)
-Hofn campground (3.5/5 stars)
-Skaftafell (5/5 stars)
-Skogar Campground (2/5 stars)
-Hamragardar (Seljalandsfoss) (4/5 stars)
