About
The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is a work of art conceived by the legendary artist and peace advocate Yoko Ono as a beacon to world peace. It is dedicated to the memory of John Lennon. The IMAGINE PEACE TOWER is located on Viðey Island in Kollafjörður and it's light is well visible from Reykjavík city and the capital area. Every year the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER emerges an hour after sunset between 9 October (Lennon's day of birth) and 8 December (Lennon's demise). In addition the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER emerges for one week on winter solstice, on New Year's Eve, for one week during spring equinox and few other selected dates. The ever changing weather conditions play an interesting part to the strength, intensity and brilliance of the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER’S light. During it's lighting time guided tours are avaiable called the Imagine Peace Tour. The tour is dedicated to the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER and Lennon’s and Ono’s continuing campaign for world peace. It is run by Elding with departures from Reykjavík's Old harbour. The tour unites history, art and nature is an interesting way.

As a Beatles fan, this was a must see and did not disappoint. It is so moving to see the words "Imagine Peace" in multiple languages and the lovely blue light shining skyward. Highly recommend.

While I admire the idea behind it, this is about as ill-conceived an idea that I have ever seen attempted. This "attraction" is located on a small, pastoral island (Viðey) in the Reykjavik harbor. Under danish rule, the Governor of Iceland lived there. The island is accessed by a short ferry ride and then you can walk around the island for a few hours and have a nice lunch or snack at the old farmhouse-turned-restaurant. They used to have horseback riding there in the summer but I haven't seen that recently. The Imagine Peace Tower is a gawd-awful laser beam that is lit at night and sends a disconcerting death ray into the almost pristine heavens. It is ugly to look at during the day and absolutely inappropriate--nothing more than light pollution. Yoko Ono is famous for her bad ideas and this is one of her worst! I may be in the minority on this but considering my uncle's statue (Solfar) is across the harbor and not quite out of site from this monstrosity, I take personal exception.

Dear rockman1960, Thank you for visiting Viðey Island and sharing your thoughts about the IMAGINE PEACE TOWER. This piece like others is of course a subject of debate. Some people appreciate it's message and meaning while others don't. We're happy about it and it's placement on the island; although it's in some ways remote the light can still be enjoyed from the whole Reykjavík area. PS. for the past two years horseback riding tours have been available on the island during the summer months. Kind regards the Viðey team

This was one of my most memorable experiences in Iceland. The tour guide and tour operator were excellent - our guide was a young lady from Germany named Bipsy (or that is how it sounds, not sure the spelling). She shared alot of info about the Island, Whales, The Peace Tower, etc. It was a rainy night when we visited the Peace Tower which made it even more beautiful. Our party of 4 shared the trip with one gentleman from Germany. It was very personal and transformative. What I took away from Iceland and the tour to Peace Tower is the feeling that Iceland is about Peace and Unity and Community.

This was an unexpected jewel in the crown of our Reykjavik city break. We were in town when it was lit (March 25th 2015) and we ventured out for the night boat trip to Videy which in itself was magical and then just after we arrived on the island the cloud broke and the Northern Lights put on a fabulous green and purple display and then as the clouds returned we continued to the tower and were surprised by the smallness of the white marble(?) base but were immediately impressed by the strength of the lights and the height they went to, then without warning a blizzard struck and OMG what a beautiful sight, every snow flake became a shimmering jewel of light - mere words cannot do justice to the spectacle we saw on Wednesday. thank you Yoko thank you John (in whose memory Yoko designed this) and thank you to Mother Nature who ensured that we had the most fantastic and memorable night possible - a million pounds couldn't have bought that night for us! Still in ecstasy 2 nights later having returned home and back to work. I recommend Iceland, I recommend Reykjavik, but make sure you go when the tower is lit - you will not regret or forget it. Malcolm & Helen.

I attempted to visit the John Lennon Peace Tower on October 13th, 2018. The peace tower website stated that the videy island ferry would offer rides at 8 pm at 1550kr. We ran all over the pier in search of the ferry only to find out that the only boat that goes out there at night is the tour boat which costs an astronomical $85 PER PERSON. the websites and information online is SO unorganized and misleading!!!! Unfortunately it was our last day in Iceland so we couldn't go at any other time! Very disappointed and annoyed with the information available on this!!!!

This is only lit up between Nov 9 and Dec 8, so if it isn't this time, its nothing to see - just a concrete circle. It's meaningful, but nothing much to see. Still go to Videy Island though - the peaceful serenity is worth it!

We booked a visit to the Imagine Peace Tower. Initially we were supposed to go out on the Friday but when arriving with our small children in tow we were advised by the lovely tour guide lady to perhaps come back another day as the weather wasn't great. I'm so glad we were given this option as we were worried about going out on the boat with our small beings, with the sea as choppy as it was. We took our tickets back to the office and were reissued tickets for the following monday. The tour itself was amazing, taking us over to Videy Island which is uninhabited meaning our tour of 12 people were the only ones on the island that evening which in itself is pretty special. The Imagine Peace tower was magical, our tour guide was great, really informative and knowledgable. We had some lovely hot drinks in one of the buildings and we also visited the church at the end of the tour. We got our first glimpse of the northern lights here too, which was the cherry on top of an amazing trip to Iceland. Thanks Elding, you're highly recommended.

We couldn’t travel to Videy island, but to see this vision of light rise high into the night sky, each and every night, was awesome. Who doesn’t love peace. It provokes a message, artistic, quietly and fearcely strong, of love and peace. It gave me hope and comfort, just visualising it, on cold day nights. Thank you Yoko !
