Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is classic late 19th Century design. A big stone building with very thick walls. We spotted it as we shopped in the downtown area. There are nice stores on the ground level. Looks almost like a castle.

Famous architectual trio Gesellius-Lindgren-Saarinen designed in 1901 this corner palace for the new Pohjola Insurance Company still operating. The grinning monsters and other figures lurking over the doors and windows are the work of female artist Hilja Flodin. The winding staircase is lighted by lanterns on wooden poles, there are benches with elaborate carvings, two scenes from Kalevala made in colourfull mosaic and stained glass windows. Unfortunately access inside is limited to companies located there.

I attended the Japanese New Year concert with Sibelius Finland Experience and was touched by the commitment of musicians and atmosphere, Can recommend Sibelius Experience to all who like live performance.

Once I read about the exterior of this old building, I had to find it! It is covered with carved beasts of all sorts and gargoyles which are taken from legend and folklore of Finland. I suppose it was the insurance company's reminder that beasts are out there and let us insure you!

Lovely live piano recital in a small, but charming venue, three flights up in Balder Hall, across from Helsinki Cathedral. The host was a learned Sibelius expert whose warm personality was particularly endearing. The pianist and guest violinist were both very talented, and the CD was a bonus.

This centrally located Pohjola Insurance building was built in 1901. It was designed by the famous Finnish architect Eliel Saarinen who also designed, for example, the Helsinki Central Railway Station.

The building is a prominent example of Finnish national romantic architecture. It is covered in gargoyles and grotesques taken straight from Finnish folklore and legend.

Though short, this presentation provides quite a lot of information about Finnish composer Jean Sibelius, his life, his music, and his importance to Finland. The pieces played by members of the Sibelius Academy give flavor to the discussion and are accompanied by a pleasant slide show. This was almost distracting, and I found myself closing my eyes from time to time, though. If you want a good overview of Sibelius' place in Finnish life, and if you want to experience a little Sibelius music (1 hr), this is an excellent option.

The Tom of Finland Experience provided an excellent summary of a few salient points from the life of Touko Laaksone, but it didn't really dive deep. A nice walk was involved that linked a few places in Helsinki to Touko, but they were far apart and the walk between them provided an excellent opportunity to provide the group with more information about Touko or his life in Helsinki...but that opportunity was unfortunately missed. If you've seen the movie, it was interesting to tie some of the places from the movie to the locations in Helsinki (such as the Esplanade), and the tour had the feeling of being built around the movie. I'd definitely recommend taking the tour if you're interested in Tom of Finland, but know that it provides an overview but not a lot of substance.
