Popular recreation area next to the city center
Dec. 2020
Tervasaari is a small island that can be reached on foot from Pohjoisranta.

The island is named after a warehouse of tar exporters once located on the island. The warehouse is still left. Restaurant Savu operates here.

You can also find Tervasaari Summer Theater and dog parks for small and large dogs, as well as a dog beach.

The views are panoramic. Katajanokka and its icebreakers are best seen from here.

Central summer oasis
Jul. 2019 • Solo
A small leisure boat harbour opens at Kruunuhaka shore on both sides of the narrow road leading to Tervasaari, an island. On a hot summer day people are sun bathing on the lawns admiring the scenery as huge ice breakers stand docked at Katajanokka in the back ground. It is a shame and pity that agricultural waste seeping into seawater prevents swimming as the algae formed in hot weather is a health hazard. There is a rather expensive restaurant in an old barn, people are sitting in the shade on the terrace drinking, a summer theatre has a small cafeteria beside it.

The nice walking and recreational area near the city centre
Jun. 2018 • Family
Tervasaari means literally Tar Island. Historically tar warehouses were located on the island due to fire safety reasons. The last remaining storehouse was built in 1805 and the causeway to the island was built in 1939.

Nowadays this tiny (2.9 hectares) island is a popular walking area. Restaurant Savu (read separate Tripadvisor reviews) is located in the last storehouse. There are also a summer theater, a playground and dogs' swimming beach on the island.

I walked here with my teenage son. We loved the almost natural environment near the city center. Tervasaari and Töölönlahti Bay are my favorite recreational areas near the city center of Helsinki. Tervasaari is especially nice if the weather is warm and sunny but if it is windy, it may be quite cold there.

Idyllic spot with gorgeous views
May 2018 • Couples
Tervasaari is a small, wooded island in the harbour to the east of Helsinki; accessible via a causeway from the city. The causeway is lined on both sides with a marina. The island is very pleasant with woodland and a pathway all around it. Lots of folk walking their dogs or just enjoying the evening sunshine when we visited. Great views of the Helsinki waterfront. Very special little place.

Sylvan haven with grand vistas

As the evening sun was beginning to fade, it was lovely approaching the bridge to the island. To our right we had splendid views of the impressive marina and Uspenski Cathedral.

The little island is most attractive and seems a world away from the city. The encircling pathway is short so we effortlessly did two rounds of it.

We were rewarded with tranquility and splendid vistas on all sides. Particularly impressive were the powerful ice breakers tied up on the north side of Katajanokka. Not needed at this time of year, they are readied for the harsh winter ahead.
