The Great war island is river island situated in Zemun, Belgrade, Serbia.
Island is lying at the confluence of river Sava and Danube. It is often flooded during the winter.
Island is home for rare spicies of birds and fish.
During the summer, when water is low, north side is used as beach called Lido. It is sandy beach accessible by boats or by bridge that sets the army from may to september. Crossing the bridge is free. Beach is safe, with lifeguards. Toilets are accessible, also showers. Island has electricity and running water, restaurant and camp. Camp is free and all you need is tent, sun cream and strong will (lot of mosquitoes). Some locals have cottages at the island and if you want to see rest of island (forest, channels...) you can always ask for help.
Adventurers, come and enjoy!

This is amazing place located just opposite the Kalemegdan fortress, between the rivers sava and danube, and opposite New Belgrade and suburb of Zemun. This huge island is just magical without the presence of people, with lots of animals, birds.... It should stay untached. One of a kind in the whole Europe.

It is a big river island that is approachable from Zemun only, across a pontoon bridge, and only in summer, unless you have a boat, of course. It is a green area for nature lovers, especially bird watchers. There is not much less than that. There is a beach in summer on the tip facing Zemun, a youth camping site, a small settlement of dilapidated alternative wooden holiday houses. You can approach the bank and have different views on the city all around. This is not for everyone, but if you feel like escaping from the city into almost complete green surrounded by water, it is there. There is little chance of getting lost there, it is not that wild, there are paths, and in summer they are maintained and the grass is even cut. There is a wooden tower for bird-watchers and a sign with pictures and names of the birds that live or visit the place.
If you go for a great green area, but with a lot of sport facilities, cafes and restaurants, Ada Ciganlija (lake) is the right place for you.

Located at the very confluence of 2 biggest rivers in the region - Sava river and the Danube, Great War Island is a very important oasis of rivers' wildlife. Because of tens of protected species Great War Island is under the protection of State. It is reachable only by boat, and represents a natural resort where Belgrade citizens escape from urban stress.

Over the summer, a bridge was erected because the left side of the island is essentially Lido Beach, but the right side of the island is untouched by nature, the path leads through the forest.

A bit like Vancouver has Stanley island, Belgrade has Great War island.
Unbelievable that so close to a big city white-tailed eagles nest and for the last four years successfully raised their chicks. I am glad the city authorities abandoned their plans to "develop" the island into a big amusement park and instead turned two thirds of it into a nature reserve. In summer Belgradians flock to the Northern tip of the island where there is Lido beach. It can be reached on foot by a pontoon bridge from Zemun.
Puzzled where the name Great War Island came from? The name officially appeared after 1717, when Prince Eugene of Savoy used the island as an attack point in his re-conquest of Belgrade from the Turks.
Hope to preserve nature will be given first priority and that use for military purposes or tourist development will be something of the past.

The Great War Island is one of the most representative ecological and visual images of Belgrade, with its characteristic flora and fauna.
It is located right at the confluence of the rivers Sava and Danube and has always represented an area of military and strategic importance for Belgrade – whenever the city was being conquered or liberated. For instance, in 1521 when the Turks besieged Belgrade for the first time, they used Great War Island to attack the Belgrade Fortress from there.
It was created by sedimentation and accumulation of alluvial deposit as a result of the fact that the river Sava slows down in this area and prevents the sand deposits from going further. The surfacing layers of the island are alluvial deposits of the rivers Sava and Danube. Due to these processes the island has been changing its shape very often and this is taking place also in the present time.
The island occupies 208 hectares.
The vegetation of the Great War Island is directly influenced by the flooding regime and underground waters. The area is covered with willow and popular woods. The white willow association is dominating the island. The abundant ornithological fauna is one of the most important characteristic of the island. Even 196 bird species live on the island, out of which only six are not recognized as significant on international level. Approximately one hundred species enjoy the status of national natural rarity in Serbia and almost one hundred are protected by permanent hunting ban on the national level. There are also several species that in this country have the status of vanished, critically endangered and endangered species. There is also the Lido beach which is connected to the pontoon bridge to the Zemun promenade.

Protected piece of nature in front of the most popular places in Belgrade. There is a beach, sports facilities and fantastic nature. Protected species live on the island in the middle of the forest and on river banks.
