This 1600's king of Sweden eventually assumed the mantle of leadership at the age of 16 upon the death of his father. He ultimately died in battle, a consummate soldier and leader to the end.

In the interim, he had 2 wives and was Christina's father. For anyone who has been to Stockholm's City Hall and toured the "Gold Room," the mosaic scene of a young Christina giving up the crown so she could embrace Roman Catholicism is memorable. She would have been ruler but for her beliefs. Protestantism, being what it was, was a protest against that in which she believed.

As for the great man himself, he is considered to be the father of modern warfare; having introduced concepts he employed in Germany. At home, he pioneered reforms inculding the establishment of a Supreme Court, and educational changes. Had he lived longer, who is to say what he could have achieved.

The equestrian statue stands in the "torg" (square) very close by to the Royal Opera House and isn't too far from the Parliament Building.

We learned more about this man while on a tour with Free Tour Stockholm and it's true that if you type Stockholm into google maps, you get this statue. Apparently he's one of the greatest military commanders of all time and the founder of Sweden as a great power, so I can see why the swedes love him. Well that's the man, who has a statue in a prime position, the statue however isn't spectacular.

An imposing equestrian statue, on a traffic island, close to the opera house and facing the palace. It may well be on your approach to Gamla Stan anyway, but if you’re coming via a different route it’s worth a short diversion.

The statue of the most important Swedish king has stood on Gustav Adolfs torg since 1791. On this square there is live music on a stage every summer. In the immediate vicinity stands the Royal Opera, the Arvfurstens palats and the Sagerska huset directly on the Norrbro, which leads via Norrström.

This bronze statue appearing in aquamarine and green hues is well mainained. Its height is comfortable for viewing and taking pictures . The area seems crowded with many sightseeing tours starting from here. Its footsteps are well cobbled and comfortable for standing and walking. Information regarding the statue is available.

The statue is situated in the middle of the Gustav Adolf's Square next to the Royal Opera House. The statue is from 1796 and made by the French sculptor Pierre l'Archeveque.

Gustav II Adolf was the King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632 and is credited as the founder of Sweden as a Great Power.

This statue seemed to be undergoing some kind of renovation work when I visited in late Jan and so I didn't bother taking any pics (in any event it was dark when I visited so they probably wouldn't have turned out so well). Imposing statue of the Swedish king. Worth a quick stop as you explore the old town.

The statue of the powerful King Gustav II is immortalized in this bronze statue in the square opposite of the entrance to the Opera building. This was Sweden’s’ first bronze statue that included a horse. The King presides and is over-looking the canal, Old Town and the Royal Palace. There are a couple of benches near the statue if you need a break or need a moment to plan out your touring options.

I was walking by when I noticed the statue and googled for information. He was the King of Sweden from 1611 to 1632 and is credited as the founder of Sweden as a Great Power. He led Sweden to military supremacy during the Thirty Years War, helping to determine the political as well as the religious balance of power in Europe.
