- NabilBKKSaint-Nom-la-Breteche, France244 contributionsGreat Museum to discover Swedish Modern Art.I loved this small museum as it gives a great mix between famous painters and displaying local artist. Great place to know more about Swedish artists. Also i want to send a special thank you note to Mark Bengtssen who gave me the chance to visit this museum.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 September 2023
- KityaymaSydney, Australia559 contributionsGreat overall experienceWe walked over to the museum from Gamla Stan on a freezing cold day and were very pleased to enter this warm, cosy and colourful museum. We began our visit at the cafe (which has great views), and enjoyed a well priced and deliciously warming lentil goulash soup with bread and salad. The staff were very friendly and there were stacks of art books available for visitors to peruse making the place feel very homey and welcoming. The Moderna Museet gives a great introduction to Swedish modern art for people like me who have not seen a lot of it. There are also many international artists and a variety of styles represented. The hands on origami table near the exit was enjoyed by children and adults alike. My favourite pieces were the vibrant and playful sculptures out front by French artists Jean Tinguely and Niki de Saint Phalle, who were also responsible for the Kandinsky Fountain Centre Pompidou in Paris.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 28 October 2023
- Gregory WMankato, Minnesota3,826 contributionsNice Day at the MuseumModerna Museet has one of Europe's finest collections of modern and contemporary art. It includes key works by Pablo Picasso, Matisse, Niki de Sant Phalle, and Mapplethorpe along with works by contemporary practicing artists such as Marion Scemama and Sixten Sandra Osterberg. The collection comprises approximately 6,000 paintings, sculptures and installations, some 45,000 watercolors, drawings and prints, and 100,000 photographs. It opened in 1958. While there, they also have a nice gift shop, cafe, and restaurant.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 December 2023

One of the restaurants has a stunning view of the sea and islands surrounding, and a view of the Vasa museum across the water.Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 January 2024
- James W46 contributionsBriliant art gallery, well worth a visit. This is a great art gallery, lots of variety in the collections and displays, it felt like there was something for everyone. Well layed out and very accessible, we enjoyed all of the current exhbits, especially the Lotte Laserstein section. Not too expensive either.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 5 March 2024
- Hannelore HUnited Kingdom279 contributionsReally enjoyable shot of contemporary cultureReally enjoyable shot of contemporary culture. Fully enjoyed both the permanent and temporary expositions, lot to absorb. Some rooms also provide unique views of Stockholm waterfront - a piece of art in itself. There is also quite a unique exposition of oversized colourful abstract sculptures outside the museum - an attraction in itself. There's also plenty of interactive craft areas for kids or anyone creative, too.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 17 April 2024
- alexr080 contributionsA good spot in StockholmThis is a worth a visit museum for (all) people interested in art. One will find a carefully planned exhibition space, a good service (including the buffet) and a really interesting collection. Some of the presented works were known to me from reproductions but I was not aware it are on display in this museum. The temporary exhibitions we met (not all, but some) were interesting. I recommend the museum without doubt. Not only National Gallery is the spot - Moderna Museet is the spot too.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 July 2024
- HHesseGeneva, Switzerland66 contributionsEclectic and provocativeBeautiful location and eclectic set of exhibitions and standing collections — some rather provocative. We enjoyed the interactive nature of various parts of the museum and the ability to see the art up close. Nice cafe and terrace to boot. Recommended.Visited August 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 August 2024
- Andrzej116London, United Kingdom375 contributionsWONDERFUL EXPERIENCEA large collection with the first room containing some modern greats. Of particular interest was the Swedish & Nordic art sections introducing new names & a large number of female artists. The Third Hand curated by Maurizo Cattelan & including a number of his major works was enlightening and challenging. Lockers to store your stuff , and we had lunch in the lovely cafe overlooking the water. Just a wonderful experience & it felt so Swedish.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 September 2024

The museum is free, but you will have to pay if they have an exhibition on. During my visit, there was an exhibition by Swedish artist Hilma Klint.
The exhibits are mostly of lesser know artists, but I did enjoy them. They have a couple of Henri Matisses and I saw a Warhol too.
I will recommend

I'm far from the most cultured of men, so things like pieces of silver corrugated cardboard and cat litter bags don't do much for me, but drop in names like Picasso and Warhol, and you have my attention.
It was the well-known artists that got me there, but I left appreciating quite a few other pieces. I wouldn't really be able to say why, away from 'I like how it looks', but I don't think that's a bad thing.
Oh, and the bizarre items make for fun posts on Insta, so there's that too.

One of my favourite place in Stockholm - and in the world, actually! This time I was completely mesmerized by the fantastic display of the Hilda af Klint's work. We were there Friday evening and the museum was full of art lovers, mostly attracted by Klint's exhibition, but we all also enjoyed the great art that is on permanent display. MM have one of the most curated museum shop ever, so don't miss that one too. Highly recommended!

The selections from the permanent collection are interesting. I liked the juxtaposition of works by well known painters (Matisse, Picasso, Klee, et al.) with Scandinavian painters of the same eras. There are clearly very major talents in the later group. I found the special exhibits of video artists less appealing, but enjoyed the exhibition of donated works (mainly paintings) from a single collector. He had a good eye.
The gallery spaces in a converted commercial building are roomy and excellent. The adjacent architecture exhibition (separate admission fee) was interesting, too, for the dozens of beautiful architectural models and play spaces for kids.
The museum has an excellent cafe with indoor and outdoor seating and remarkably personable staffers. A great place for fika!

Stockholm is rich of great museums, but this one is exceptional as it is one of the best museums for contemporary art in Europe. Take your time for the short walk from the city center and soak in the amazing atmosphere. Don't only watch the current exhibtions, also check out the great collection (and the cakes in the cafeteria).

A vast collection of modern art including artists well-known even to those with little interest in art. I did hope the exhibition would somehow introduce this kind of art to a non-enthusiast like myself which it failed to do and thus I failed to understand much of the collection. On the other hand, the entrance is free of charge to the regular exhibition and its location is beatiful so it might still be worth a try. And for modern art lovers it's a must-see.

I was expecting more from this museum than what I got. The plan/design of this museum is rather perplexing. I cannot quite pinpoint where the issue is. The paintings are arranged chronologically in many different rooms. However, contemporaneous paintings from Sweden, France and Russia look different in style. Therefore, every room looks like a hodgepodge of style and quality. I couldn't help wondering if some great paintings are now in storage to align with the thinking of curators.
I had booked a ticket for the retrospective on Lynette Yiadom-Boakye. But it was canceled due to an "accident" of some kind on the day I was there. The museum did refund the money.
I did enjoy the cafe though!

Moderna Museet is on little island Skeppsholmen in Stockholm. Beautiful views, great art gallery. Ideal tip for spending afternoon in Stockholm. We strolled through the gallery, than stopped for coffee, and walked around the little island to take photos of Stockholm.
