Visit Waimangu Volcanic Valley and find out how the world began. Incredible...

Visit Waimangu Volcanic Valley and find out how the world began. Incredible Waimangu is the world's youngest geothermal system and a destination for travellers of all ages and fitness levels. Created in 1886 as the result of a massive volcanic eruption, Waimangu offers today's travellers a choice of easy self-guided walks through a natural environment of volcanic craters and awesome geothermal activity. Frying Pan Lake is the world's largest hot water spring; stunning Inferno Crater will take your breath away with the beauty of its turquoise blue lake; the environment itself will slow you down and soothe your soul. The more advanced Mt Haszard hike rewards with panoramic views, and our Lake Rotomahana cruise will reveal further geothermal activity that can only be seen from our vessel. Your entrance fee includes interpretive guides in a wide variety of languages for both the walks and the cruise. Our courtesy coach regularly circulates the valley to take you to your Lake Rotomahana Cruise, or back to the Visitor Centre when you've finished your walk, where you can enjoy refreshments in our modern Café or browse for mementos and souvenirs at our gift shop. Depending on how much time you have, your walk or cruise can range from 45 minutes to over 4 hours.

Waimangu Volcanic Valley is more than a fascinating geothermal experience like Yellowstone. It's also a walk through the forest and it's just beautiful. The handout they give you is the best I've ever had on a hike, explaining every site in detail. At the end is a boat ride on the lovely lake where you learn even more and have... More

Wow! What a lovely walk through a valley with so much to offer in terms of regional flora and some amazing geo thermal spots. We had a great morning. Not a hugely tough walk though very uneven footing at times. They do have a shuttle bus that will pick you up at certain points on the route. We did not... More

This place was definitely worth a visit - the geology, hot springs, bubbling mud... it was all just so out of ordinary for us. We had a rainy day, but that didn`t stop us and we walked through the valley (only us two as others tourists were probably put off by the rain) with the umbrella and took a bus... More

Visitors often comment to us that they felt that they were the only people at Waimangu, while walking through the Valley. Such is the intimacy of the pathways, and the power of the peaceful nature you will experience here. More

This park was nice to walk through but I had expected something a bit more spectacular for the entree fee we payed. It was just a slight upgrade from the rotorua city park which is free. Worht while but overpriced.

It is touristy as is the rest of Rotorua but it is beautiful! We loved it and it's very diverse. A bus at the end of the walk brings you back to your car.

I think most people would say we are definitely less "touristy" than the rest of Rotorua. We fly under the radar ! No crowds of people here at Waimangu. More

My co-worker and I have visited Waimangu without knowing about our local discount. We were willing to pay full price, however, the consistency of the amazing staff with asking everyone where they are from and providing the necessary maps and information made the "just entrance" alone a pleasant experience. They were informative, helpful and happy. For us, we were excited... More

This place is huge and is a self-guided walk. I'd recommend wearing comfy shoes as you will be walking quite a bit. Love the fact that the valley has an ancient feel to it, so it felt like we were transported back in time. When you arrive, remember to get a map of the area for a better understanding of... More

this was a highlight of our trip. The walk down through the valley, with the geysers and the bubbling water was mysterious and filled my imagination of times gone by. It became very clear why Lord of the Rings was filmed in this area. The vegetation is more beautiful here than other thermal regions and the guided tour boat trip... More

it was raining when we went so very quiet and easy to walk around and photograph everything. We did a half day self walk but if you want to do the boat trip at the end you need a full day.

Waimangu is great to see in any weather, but amazing on a rainy day with the magnificent steam effects. More
