This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

Just what you'd expect from a commune that has separated itself from the city. It's a very easy going place although the sellers on Pusher St are quite intimidating in balaclavas behind camouflage mesh. The atmosphere is very relaxed probably because everyone is smoking weed but if that's what you're into then it's a Mecca for you. There are some... More

It was different to say the least. Your not allowed to take pictures and no running as you walk through. I found the Commune to be quite dirty, although it was good for a look and to say ive been there.

People there are not friendly.Dirty place. Saw drugs. We did not have fun touring this area of the city. We enjoyed everywhere else in Copenhagen.

Perhaps not an area to be visited as an independent visitor but with a tour guide and to understand the history of this location was very interesting to the lifestyle of the residents. Trafalgar tour guide provided so much information and knowledge.

I do not agree with the writers here who say there is nothing to see. I never touched drugs in my life but found it funny to see those losers selling it while having a mask over their face. Great free music too in a place called Operaen (not thé Opera ofcourse!)

Stepping into Christiania is stepping into a different world. It is completely different from the rest of Copenhagen. The distinct smell of weed and the colorful wall arts are everywhere. It is a nice walk and a few interesting stores, but some corners of the place can be a little sketchy. There are some pretty strict rules--like no cameras/pictures/even phones... More

Christiana is a commune started in the early 70s when some hippies squatted in an abandoned building. At the time, the land had little value and nobody cared. Over time, the commune spread and the land became very valuable, but it continues as a collective. It is self governing and residents build houses but do not own the land. When... More

Go with an open mind. The atmosphere is like a music festival - smiley, happy people and music. A beautiful lake to sit and picnic around. Bars, cafes, stalls and stage area. Lots of things to explore; bright, colourful people and buildings. Great graffitti. The green zone is great for smokers. Relaxed and friendly. The first rule of Christiania is-... More

I do not understand why there are positive reviews on tripadvisor: perhaps I have missed the nice part of this place. I only saw a dirty and badly kept place where you can see people queuing to buy some drugs from guys with covered face yelling at tourists taking pics. Don't waste your time to arrive to this place. Copenhagen... More

Place has a lot of hype and it worth a10 minute walk through - but that is about it. Messy and smelly - not much cool art. Many many stalls selling dope of many kinds. And many young adults smoking dope and drinking. A relative bore - not an interesting hippie colony.

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
