This hippy enclave is an alternative community unto itself, with local handicrafts and a disproportionate number of vegetarians, artists and young people. Go for a walk around the lake or check out one of the watering holes. Best to visit during the day.

A funky part of town with colorful graffiti shacks....some were small restaurants and others selling weed. If you go in so far, there are rules to follow, like no photos and no running! A very laid back place that reminded me of the hippies back in the 60s. A fun place to visit and a place you will never forget!

This place is so different from any tourist attraction you'll ever see. It's a city in the city, a small oasis of freedom and peace. Yes, you can buy weed, but no one will ask you to. Drink a beer in Nemoland or just walk around and see all the different people of Copenhagen

Christiania is a neighborhood in Copenhagen that considers itself a sovereign nation. The place has a very hippy theme and is really lively. Beautiful graffitis on the walls of old buildings make it even more beautiful. You can get stuff that you wont get anywhere else in Copenhagen. Just be sure not to click any photos in the green light... More

When in Copenhagen you shouldn't miss Christiania. Go for a walk, have a cup of tea or a meal, absorb the atmosphere. There are often free concerts in Christiania, check that out. When you stroll around the area, don't forget that people actually live there. Tourists tend to be a little to insensitive to the privacy factor.

Great place, completely different outlook on what life should be like. Go with an open mind to a different culture. Take a walk around the lake

Walking through Christiana was fine and there were many tourists using the cafe facilities but the one section where people had there face covered was very strange and made us feel uncomfortable especially in the world we are living in. Not sure I can recommend a visit here.

This is such a unique spot, it would be a shame to miss it in your trip to Copenhagen. The people in Christiania are very friendly, you can walk around, sit by the lake, listen to live music, and buy a few souvenirs.

If you are into alternative things this is definitely a must see. The locals don't have a problem with tourists provided you don't take photos because of illegal activities. You can buy certain substances in there or just walk around or get something to eat or drink. Anything you buy in there goes into the community. Don't be put off... More

Definitely worth a visit here if you like the alternative scene. Lots of cool graffiti, art work, skating areas, shops and cafes. We especially liked the stalls selling handmade jewellery for a reasonable price. Also loved the music blaring on the main streets and was nice to see locals dancing around enjoying themselves - a very free and happy atmosphere.... More

Staying in Christianshavn

Neighbourhood Profile
Christianshavn
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.
