About
This hippy enclave and alternative community in the heart of Copenhagen is home to many artists and artisans. Here, you can wonder at colorful street art all around, and stop by cozy cafes for some top-notch craft beers. Enjoy the area’s bohemian vibes as you hunt for offbeat handicrafts, and go for a walk around the lake or stroll down the infamous Pusher Street—where you’ll be required to put your camera away. During warmer months, this neighborhood is a great spot for some outdoor, waterside fun. Christiania is more welcoming to travelers during the day. – Tripadvisor

Top ways to experience Christiania
The area
Neighbourhood: Christianshavn
Just across one of the many bridges from Indre By, you’ll find Christianshavn. An eclectic area with old brick lanes, houses dating back to the 16th century, and canals which are home to many boats and ships, some of which has been turned into restaurants or even serve as fully furnished homes. The best known attraction in Chistianshavn is Christiania, a “free town” of residents who squat on a former military area. However just a stone’s throw away from Christiania, you’ll find some of the most fashionable waterfront apartment buildings in Copenhagen as well as the splendid Royal Opera House.

- Li SEly, United Kingdom1,013 contributionsIt's high time you gave it a visitOur band was visiting from the UK to play a show in Copenhagen, and we had a day free before soundcheck so wandered up here. As you can imagine a band coming through an airport we got a LOT of attention from security, and had EVERYWHERE swabbed for drugs, so we weren't here to indulge before our flight back! It was fun to be in a totally different world to the sensible Copenhagen outside. We felt pretty safe. Cool art. Had a kind of 'all year round festival' vibe. Glad to have seen it.Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 4 October 2023
- SalehAl Jubail, Saudi Arabia382 contributionsHippy NeighborhoodA neighborhood filled with crack sellers and buyers. If you want to visit it, come during day time since in the night it could be unsafe. Though, there are some shops selling some nice art stuff.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 21 October 2023
- SFPriorHigh Wycombe, United Kingdom898 contributionsFelt we should see it!Felt like we should visit the free neighbourhood of Christiania whilst in Copenhagen. Didn’t feel at all threatened like some of the other reviewers. There are a couple of cafes and an indoor market which we hadn’t expected. If you are short of time I wouldn’t rush to go!Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 28 November 2023
- HolzfrogThames Ditton, United Kingdom1,948 contributionsAvoid Pusher St and the rest is fab!We came here on a Danish friend’s recommendation and absolutely loved it. Yes pusher street is grim and I’d say avoid that end totally if you’re not there to get stoned. But the rest is like an alternative world - we walked the loop of Christiania - over the bridge, round the other island which was stunning and had lots of gorgeous unique homes and back round past the famous restaurant Nomo. Make sure you stop off at the lovely shop The Essence if you can as the owner makes fab unique clothing. Honestly loved every second in Christiania - we spent hours there and felt completely safe as 2 young females. You need to go with an open mind and know where you can and can’t take photos!!Visited January 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024
- BettyTallinn, Estonia98 contributionsCool streets filled with artWandered around Christania, it is filled with cool street art. In May 2024 there was a lot of construction going on. You can visit some gallerys, shops and cafes, the gallerys we found were free! Fun place to check out, but other than that, not much to do.Visited May 2024Travelled soloWritten 28 May 2024

- jemLiverpool, United Kingdom24 contributionsQuirky place to visit!Quirky little place to wander around, it’s very different to the rest of Copenhagen but I quite enjoyed the contrast. However my husband and daughter weren’t so sure! The opening sign we stumbled across regarding Pusher street being closed due to drugs and criminal activity put them on edge the whole time we were there, but I never once felt threatened or in danger! It’s definitely something different to see, but not loads to do. I enjoyed the vibe of the place overall.Visited May 2024Travelled with familyWritten 7 June 2024
- Ali921Edinburgh, United Kingdom1,487 contributionsNot what you are let to expectIt will not be what you are expecting. It is no longer like its history. Now more of a tourist trap than alternative lifestyle. Some stalls, some shops, some workshops (probably not allowed in), cafes and lots of graffiti. I think they need a new cause to fight for.Visited June 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 June 2024
- Vicki K34 contributionsInteresting place to explore!Freetown Christiana, located just outside Copenhagen, is a community that operates independently. This place stands out for its own rules and hippie vibe. Felt safe at all times while exploring this interesting neighborhood. Its vibrant colors, street art, great sense of freedom and creativity make it unique. The people of the community are nice and friendly as long as you are respectful and follow their rules. It was an enjoyable experience and definitely worth the visit!Visited July 2024Travelled soloWritten 7 August 2024

I thought this place was cool and quirky, but if you are someone who is somewhat uncomfortable in what could be deemed or seen as dingy areas it's propbablt not for you. It is a self sufficient community that is very safe to be in, it just looks the opposite. The girls we were with felt uncomfortable throughout so we weren't there long, but it was cool to see this way of life, Christiania is separate to Copenhagen in the sense of its self sufficiency and also only has around 200 residents. Be prepared to see drug stalls and parafinalia but do not be alarmed whatsoever, but also do not think it'll be similar to somewhere like Amsterdam or places in America that sell weed as it is not. I would recommend but those with a nervous disposition probably would feel uncomfortable.

We - tourists - walked around in Copenhagen and coincidentally saw this area and took a look. After seeing artists spraying and hearing that there is obviously a concert, we decided to explore Christiania further. Eventually, we stayed until 11 PM (or later? ;-)) enjoying this alternative place within Copenhagen, being impressed by the graffiti/murals and other interesting things. There were also plenty of eating and drinking offers.
We really recommend taking a look both during the day and in the evening. There is also a lake behind which underlines the relaxed atmosphere.

We booked a tour with a local resident (online search christiania tours).
The tour started in the small arts museum and shop, that's right in the entrance right after the big wooden statue.
We were guided by a person that's been living in Christiania since 1976, she's an artist/ceramist. She led us through the most part of Christiania, while telling us some personal stories and the stories of some of the houses, in her huge bike. All the houses have names.
Christiania has to be seen through the eyes of a local to be understood, so I totally recommend booking the tour (we payed 50€). There's a lot of history and politics involved. Almost more politics than history! :D It's a big big land divided by a lake, with a single, very busy, bridge.
Christiania is very very busy. You see all sorts of people there. Apart from the Pusher street, we always felt totaly safe.
We had lunch before the tour in Morgenstedet, the oldest vegetarian restaurant in Copenhagen and loved it. No cards accepted, all cash.
We don't know if we would have visited for that long, if it were not for the tour. She guided us for about two hours. You can spend a lot of time there, just hanging by the lake or the gardens, but as we were on the tour, we were able to go deeper in the community.

It was utterly pouring and blowing a gale so we didn't walk around that much but I didn't find it scary or anything. I'm in my 60s so it wasn't an unfamiliar scenario, hippy a bit like I remember. Due to the weather, we popped into a pub and that's exactly what it was, not a bar. The booze was far cheaper than anywhere else in Copenhagen and, as it was still torrential, I proceeded to get rather merry or steaming as we say in Scotland.

We went for the street art after hearing about it and seeing it on a few music videos, the artwork is amazing in areas!
We went with our child and it is not well signed posted (like I thought it was) and ended up going down Pushers Street by mistake and then having to walk back through as we couldn't find our way out, the people never said anything to us but did to a few others, I appericated being left alone.
We did not try any food or anything there so can not comment.
There was alot of animal mess around so just be aware when walking.
I would not visit again, it was interesting to see the artwork but I felt out of place as we are not part of their community and like it is their home.
Though noone spoke to us with our child, be aware there are people who may be sleeping around the place in the daytime.
It is an interesting place and you can support it it seems legally by buying artwork, food etc but we did not find many shops around, I think we just did not do enough research.

Rather than bore you with a diatribe of repetative blah on how bad this place really is, just believe me in that you reading this and absolutely not going within 1 mile of this stinking cesspit will be the best piece of information you will get for your inner city Copenhagen travel plan. If you do get lost and wander in by mistake, then you only have yourself to blame. Escape from Chirstiania coming to a cinema near you.

As a social justice experiment, it is interesting. In reality, it seems to just be a dingy place for people to smoke marijuana. Coffee and food are cheap. I suspect it was more moving a few decades ago. Not a place for kids. Scary toilets and lots of smoking. A few interesting improvised houses, but garbage collection seems to be a problem.

Went out of curiosity more than anything else. It’s a fairly scruffy plot, decorated with the odd sculpture and wall art. The obvious is on sale but be careful with camera phones, some people were shouted at for taking photos!

From reading reviews I was under the impression this place would be more hippy and happy with a similar vibe to Amsterdam however I was very quickly proven wrong. I felt extremely vulnerable, scared and unsafe here. Full of unsavoury men who are clearly high/ looking for their next fix/ selling drugs and not giving very kind or welcoming looks. What made it worse is that it’s not very easy to navigate around and in my panic I couldn’t find my way out which made me more panicked.. if going, approach with caution !

There are things I really like and dislike about this place. Sometimes it gets very boiling in there and it feels as there are more and more problematic people vs people who are there to chill. I went there many times and I kinda know how to behave but it is not for everyone and if you are not 420 friendly you will not like it.

Will there be a Xmas eve supper in Christiana for 2018? What time should one show up to be part of the festivities? I am traveling into Copenhagen area on Dec 24th and would like to participate (volunteer?) at this event ! Any information would be helpful.
