The area
Neighbourhood: Indre By (Inner City)
This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

This square is the oldest square in Copenhagen. You find here "House of Amber" and some small restaurants. There is also the dominating feature The Caritas Well (from 1608) that is the oldest well in Copangen as well. Next is the Nytorv Square.

Walking around the Latin quarter and the main shopping area, came across the Gammeltorv, a Large square & fountain in central Copenhagen.

This is the first square that you’ll come across if you traverse the Stroget shopping strip. Not as glamorous as its sister square, Amagertorv, but nevertheless, it serves as a good rest stop in your Stroget shopping adventure. This square also branches off to the less-explored university area which contains landmarks such as the imposing Copenhagen Cathedral and St Peter’s Church.

Gammeltorv is the first square you will come up when walking the Strøget from the direction of city hall. It is the oldest square in Copenhagen, dating from the 12th century. Most of the the surrounding buildings were built after the great fire of 1795. In the center is the lovely Caritas Well (or Caritas Fountain). Gammeltorv sits right next to Nytorv, together forming one large square. To me, it is not as interesting as Amagertorv, but it is definitely worth visiting for the well and the sense of Copenhagen’s history.

Gammeltorv, or Old market, the city's oldest, though was quite interesting, with the Caritas Well, a renaissance fountain, standing at its center

Active neighborhood and commercial shops, restaurants and landmarks throughout the area. Area of the city along the Stroget. Lot of eateries and and shopping around the square. It is a great place to just stroll and enjoying the surroundings. Worth a visit!

Along Strøget is Gammeltorv which is Copenhagen's oldest square and across the street is neighbouring Nytorv. Both squares are hugely charismatic and are surrounded by Neoclassical style buildings. When we visited a Christmas Market had been set up which made the area feel very festive. Whilst in Gammeltorv it is worth visting Caritas Fountain which is the oldest fountain in Copenhagen.

After strolling Stroget we came out into this large open space with a lovely fountain. Not too much going on, but as we needed lunch we checked out the restaurants and chose City Kroen. It is very old and serves true Danish food - not always easy to come by in this cosmopolitan city. A pleasant spot to rest before continuing to explore the many small streets off Stroget.

Large, pleasant square with fountain right in the centre of Copenhagen. The oldest square in the city.
