The Hirschsprung Collection is beautifully situated in the green parklands of the Ostre Anlaeg on the old ramparts of Copenhagen. The museum houses Heinrich and Pauline Hirschsprung's collection of Danish art and first opened its doors to the public in the summer of 1911. The museum was designed by the architect H.B. Storck, while the original interior and display was designed by the art historian Emil Hannover, who also became the museum's first Director. Henrich Hirschsprung donated his collection of works from the 19th century to the Danish state in 1902. The collection includes masterpieces by the Danish Golden age painters such as Eckersberg, Lundbye and Kobke as well as artists from the modern period such as the famous Danish painters P.S. Kroyer and Vilhelm Hammershoi. Opening hours: Wednesday-Sunday: 11 AM - 4 PM. Admission: Adults 75 DDK. Under 18 free.

Your appreciation of this museum will depend on your taste in art. If you like the Danish painting scene of the 19th century, with its beaches, nature and sailors, you will love this museum, if not avoid it. The building is attractive, paintings well hung,...More

This is one of Copenhagen's best-kept secrets. This museum has a fabulous collection, especially of Danish masters, including the iconic image of the government establishing the constitution in 1849. The realist paintings give a good glimpse into the way Danes used to live. A quiet...More

If you want to see a charming collection of paintings from Denmark ‘s Golden Age, this is a good place to start. It is housed in a small Neo-Classic building near to the Art Museum.

We don't get to see many Danish artists in the US collections, so this stop was very welcome. The museum is a good size, perfect for an over view of Danish art. Golden Age and Skagen painters are nicely represented. I enjoyed the museum very...More

While in Denmark why not see Danish art. Recommend using the free audio tour ... gives great background to these lovely works of art. The Kroyer paintings were a highlight.

It was a disappointing visit. A small and unimpressive collection housed in an average building. Could be skipped

You might think of winters and snow but those scenes are almost absent from Danish life depicted in the paintings hanging here. Friendly staff. Experienced an alarm. Doors locked automatically. Nothing wrong, but a huge racket.

This small, special museum lies in the park just behind the large National Gallery of Art. If a large museum seems daunting, then come to this one. It is stocked with works from the best of Danish Golden Age (late 1700's-early 1900's) painters, especially the...More

Finally, I came here, having wanted to come here for years, and I was not disappointed. I’m no expert on Danish painters, but Krøyer is well known, so this was my main reason for coming. I recommend you taking the free audio guide as it...More

This is a private collection and a small museum. It has a very impressive range of Danish artists and is well worth the visit. We went on a Saturday when it had just opened and it was not to busy. Highly recommend a visit. Some...More
