About
The beautiful 400-year-old castle is situated in central Copenhagen's popular park, The King's Garden. The castle was built by one of the most famous Scandinavian kings, Christian IV. Today, the glory of the past can be experienced through the numerous art treasures of the previous kings and queens. Among the main attractions is the Great Hall with the coronation thrones and three life-size silver lions standing guard. The crown jewels and royal regalia sparkle behind the thick walls of the treasury beneath the castle.

Neighbourhood: Indre By (Inner City)
This is the heart of old town Copenhagen, with its blend of charming old buildings and bold new architecture, broad avenues and tiny streets as well as picturesque canals and a modern harbor. The inner city is home to the Royal Danish Theatre, which consists of three buildings, two of which are new and situated on the harbor front. The streets, squares and venues of the inner city and its surrounding neighborhoods, are alive all year round with everything from jazz festivals to outdoor ice skating rinks and parachuting at the lakes right in the center of the city. This compact area boasts beautiful old castles, tranquil parks, and bustling squares where you can always find a bench to stretch out your legs whenever you need a break.

- Corrado RVedano al Lambro, Italy1,189 contributionsRoyal experienceFantastic castle in Copenhagen city center. In order to enjoy the visit at best, I recommend to follow the guide accessible through wifi. It is very well organized with numbers under all the paintings/attractions, so that it is easy to reference during the visit. It gives a great and instructive view of the history of Danish monarchy since the 17th century.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 3 October 2023
- MAM352 contributionsIf you love jewels, you will love RosenborgVisited here on our two week tour of Denmark with family and a friend. Although I have been here before, it still remains a special place. Especially love the Treasury with the royal crowns and multiple sets of gorgeous jewelry. The emerald set is my favorite.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 15 October 2023
- AbamagalPensacola, Florida308 contributionsGorgeous Must DoAbsolutely beautifully! We enjoyed our visit to this castle. The Crown Jewels were exquisite. Note: You need to go to the ticket office even if you have the Copenhagen Pass. It’s not a big deal and takes a couple of minutes. Then you go to the locker room and lock up your purse unless it is very small, they provide a fake coin to put in the locker. Then you queue up for your allotted entry time. If you queue before your entry time you’ll be asked to step out of line until your time. This is for crowd control and was totally understandable. The ground and gardens are also amazing. The guards are doing their jobs so best pay attention and stay out of their way. The bathrooms are pretty rustic, I think this is a must do when in Copenhagen.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023
- tour-birdsSingapore, Singapore346 contributionsDefinitely worth a visit in CopenhagenBeautiful interiors and one of the must see castles in Copenhagen. There is usually quite a queue and they only allow limited number of visitors into the castle at any one time to avoid over crowding. Therefore make sure you book a slot online and come punctually. This way your wait will be fairly short. The Rose garden outside the moat is also a highlight. Lots of beautiful roses of all Colors.Visited June 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 November 2023
- Chelsea HDallas, Texas619 contributionsLovely and detailed castleThis was my 2nd attraction in Copenhagen, visiting around 2pm on a Friday in November. I used my Copenhagen Card to get in. This was my first experience with the free lockers at Copenhagen historical sites. They're easy to use and free (everywhere I visited except Glyptotek) and let you move about a site unencumbered by your bag or big coat. I went into the main reception area and glommed onto a guided tour. The guide had some fun stoties about the Marble Room, Great Hall, and Treasury Room. I enjoyed learning about the royal foibles and the origins of the Order of the Elephant. We all enjoyed his insights, but then when we tried to clap at the end in the Treasury, he had to quickly shush us because of the alarms. So that was funny. I did go back and view more of the weaponry and ivory collection on my own. This is the most open of the castles, Amalienborg and Christiansborg are both more limited.Visited November 2023Travelled soloWritten 5 November 2023
- Gardengel-IoWWest Sussex, United Kingdom1,014 contributionsWorth a stopVery good, not busy only had to wait 10 mins, only 50 allowed in at a time. Quite strict about timings. Ornate castle, next to military parade ground saw them practicing. Very ornate and colourful inside, mainly wall décor not much furniture, throne room good and silver lions impressive. Crown jewels are here too. Spent just about an hour here.Visited September 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 November 2023
- Jtaylor34London, United Kingdom28 contributionsHappy accidentWe weren’t actually looking for the castle when we paid for the tickets. However overall is was a lovely building to look at and look around. There wasn’t much to do overall but that could be more because it wasn’t to our particular taste of activity however was still very pleasant. Also recommend getting the tour book as we had no idea what we were looking at half the time.Visited November 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 26 November 2023
- L_K1509London, United Kingdom1,671 contributionsVery dark castleWe got to see a lot of the castle on our visit. The castle is lit by very dull lighting and as the furnishings were also very dark it made viewing and experiencing the castle difficult. There are lots of rooms to see, many of which are claimed to be in there original condition. Crown Jewels are in the basement were beautiful. We didn’t visit the gardens, as it was December we could see there was not much to see. We did visit the restrooms which were very smelly, unfortunately they were being cleaned by an extremely rude member of staff who tried to push visitors out of the door when they tried to go in. Included with the Copenhagen card.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 15 December 2023
- Michaela PMelbourne, Australia13 contributionsA Royal Ego on DisplayI love old castles and this one is great. Pretty dark inside, with ornate ceilings and wall panelling, but it was designed as a summer palace and I saw it in winter. The royal hall up on the third floor is very elaborate - King Christian the 4th obviously liked showing off!Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 December 2023
- McCloskey13Ireland84 contributionsBeautiful castle with treasures and artwork galoreA brilliantly preserved castle filled with loads of art and treasures inside. You go in at a timed slot, with about fifty, and then go round at your own pace. So much of it is open that you see quite a lot of rooms. Just make sure you approach the castle from the roadside, I made the mistake of trying to cut through the park and then having to walk round on myself. Don’t forget to see the Crown Jewels while you’re there!Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 December 2023

Great castle to visit in Copenhagen. Just a short walk from Nørreport station. Tour passes through castle in chronological order so you learn quite a lot of Danish Royal History. A floor plan guide is provided but these were quite difficult to read in some rooms because the lighting is low to protect the exhibits. We found it a lot better to use the iPhone tour. Really easy with no download required. Just point your camera at the QR code in each room and the relevant info came up on the internet browser. (Free Wi-fi in castle) There was also more info than on the floor plan guide. If you find the initial rooms a bit drab, don’t give up - they get more stunning. The great hall at the top is amazing with some brilliant tapestries, glass, bronze and porcelain cupboards. But the best bit is the treasury. Loads of Ivory, jewels, gold etc but this isn’t like visiting the English Crown Jewels where you are on a conveyor belt and only get a timed glimpse, the Danish even, very considerately, provide steps so that you can admire the crowns, up close, for as long as you like!

Beautiful grounds- You can take food here for picnic and Iit's the oldest royal garden in Denmark. Museum holds artifacts from 15th to 19th centuries including crown jewels. Entrance is 115DKK (~$18)
It's in walking distance to Tovehallerne where you could go for a bite to eat before or after.

A spectacular castle built by Christian the fourth 400 years ago. All the contents inside the building on three floors have royal connections including the spectacular banqueting suite on the top floor.
A self-guided tour of the castle and Treasury is very rewarding. Although you are given a good information leaflet on entry, there is no additional information in the castle itself apart from in certain areas, QR codes available as an alternative to a good guide book. Although timed tickets are available until 40 minutes before closure you really need 1 ½ hours to really do the place justice and everything closes promptly at 5pm.
They only allow 50 visitors in each 10-minute timed slot to it is strongly recommended to book tickets before arrival. Tickets had been sold out for the day and the first two slots the following morning when we arrived in the afternoon. Tickets can be booked easily on line.
Everything is immaculately maintained. Be sure to allow sufficient time to view the Treasury with its crowns and spectacular jewellery if you do this last. If necessary, rush through the middle of three floors if short on time as this is slightly less interesting. Access to the treasury section is through a different entrance.

The Rosenborg Castle is a 17th century building with an impressive collection of historical furniture and halls, including the coronation chair. But even more impressive it is the Royal Treasury, which displays the Danish Crown Regalia and Jewels. The castle is within the beautiful Rosenborg Castle Garden, which by itself deserves a visit. I would recommend booking the visit ahead of time, since the castle has very limited capacity (only 50 people can enter every 15 minutes). This can be done online. Even better is to buy and book it through the Copenhagen Card website, which provide savings for many other attractions in Copenhagen.

It looks small on the outside, but the inside is filled with beautiful rooms. As wonderful as the rooms were, the treasury was the most amazing with the most beautiful swords with inlay, wonderful carved ivory pieces, and amazing jewelry and crowns. We had seen the ivory lathe in one of the rooms and apparently the queen and noble ladies loved to turn ivory. The ivory pieces in the treasury were jaw-droppingly beautiful, as the objects were carved with impossibly lacy filigree and amazing patterns. The castle does have a limit on tickets, so you should plan to buy your tickets online before going to make sure you get a time slot. Then, there is a limit to visitors going in at one time, so you may have to stand in line, waiting to enter, but it's worth the wait.

We headed to Rosenborg Castle Gardens, by now in glorious sunshine. The castle is a beautiful building and the grounds are dotted with statues and formal displays, although there wasn't much greenery in January! There were plenty of information boards in English too. The moat was full of fish and lots of families were in the grounds, feeding the fish and ducks. It was, again, litter free too. We didn't go inside the castle or visit the cafe this time as the weather was too nice to waste!

This is the most impressive site in Copenhagen. The castle has a huge dominating presence in a series of gardens in downtown Copenhagen. You get a timed ticket at the ticket window and they let in a few people every 15 minutes. Some of the rooms are small so you can see why they space things out. The throne room is the most impressive. After you are done, you can go into the basement to see the spectacular crown jewels which rival any in Europe. The castle is covered by the Copenhagen card but you still need a timed ticket at the gate.

Well maintained renaissance castle and gardens. Many rooms to visit on multiple floors containing various artifacts spanning 3 centuries.
Definitely one of the more interesting castles / palaces I have visited.
The free leaflet is excellent, but you can also link to the castle wifi and access a free guide via a QR code.
The timeslot indicated on your ticket is for arrival/entrance only - you can stay at Rosenborg for as long as you like.
They recommend buying your ticket online, we did not, but you can check the website for availability (it indicates the number of tickets still available for the various timeslots) if you are in the area and decide to visit.

This is well worth a visit whilst in Copenhagen. We appreciated just how many of the rooms were open to the public and we got a real sense of the history. The crown jewels are the star of the show.
Some of the exhibits are a little dusty - some TLC is definitely needed here and there as surely such precious artefacts demand a little more attention?
Anyway, top tips: pick up a guide at the entrance and ensure you hv e a 20DKK coin to use for the locker as you are not permitted to take any size of bag around with you.

Hi Sarmac. Mange tak for din anmedelse. Vi råder også alle gæster til at medbringe en guide rundt på slottet - og alle der har brug for det, får udleveret en mønt ved billetsalget. Men tak for at gøre opmærksom på dette. Mvh. Trine / Kongernes Samling

In July 1995, when my son was 2, we visited this castle and, when admiring the Crown Jewels, noticed an empty display case was open. After I commented on this, an alarm rang and guards ushered us out at gunpoint, ordering us to stand against the wall with guns pointed at our heads! Suddenly my 2-year-old escaped my grasp and ran down the grassy slope.
Terrified, I yelled “Please don’t shoot!” and begged for permission to bring him back. The guard nodded so I ran after my son, and carried him back.
After some time we were allowed to go, never knowing if the jewels were recovered.
This is probably why they now make you take your phone in a plastic bag, or use lockers.
If anyone has more details of this frightening incident, please email to livelovelaughplay@hotmail.com.
Thanks

I’m thinking of purchasing the Copenhagen card which has entry into Rosenberg castle included . My question is, do you need to pre-book an entry time for the castle using the Copenhagen card or can you just turn up?
Written 3 April 2024
Just turn up we only had to wait 15 minutes last week
using the card it was only the Carlsberg Brewery that had to be prebooked and that had plenty of spaces but it was our favourite
Written 20 September 2024
Do I need to pay for a tour to walk around inside the castle or is the entry fee enough?
Written 26 February 2024
Is there a restaurant or cafe inside where we can buy and eat lunch?
Written 22 May 2023
No it doesn't but its basically in the city so there are lots close by. Nearest one is probably in the grounds across the road. However, suggest you check out the fantastic food court and market in Norreport which around 10 mins walk away.

Dear Seaside26,
Thank you for your questions and interest.
With a Copenhagen Card you would have to visit the ticket office before entering the castle to get a (free) ticket issued.
As for bags, for security reasons, bags larger than 15 x 23 x 15 centimeters must be placed in lockers before entering the castle.
Best wishes,
