Overview

Budolfi Cathedral is placed on the highest spot in the old Aalborg between the old highstreet Algade and Gammeltorv. Its snow white facade gives the cathedral a exalted expression even though its actually the smallest of its kind i Denmark. Budolfi is named after the english munk and saint, St. Bodolfus, who lived in the 700s, and was praised as a protector of travellers. Budolfi Cathedral has always played a big part in the history of Aalborg which is shown in the crest of Aalborg, which shows three church towers, whereas one is Budolfi. The other two is the Church of Our Lady Kirke and Aalborg Abbey Church. One of the reasons why Budolfi stands out is its amazing carillon which plays every hour from 8am to 10pm. The specific music is changed during the year, making it fit the different holidays and occasions. The melodies is controlled by a computer but can also be operated manually. The carillon has exsisted since 1934 but the 48 bells present today were made by the Dutch company Petit and Fritsen in 1970. The biggest bell weighs about 1250 kilos whereas the total weight of the carillon is 16 ton.

The Cathedral is easy to spot from a distance and find in town. It’s spire reaches above the modest skyline of town buildings. Nice church and worth a look.

All in all, our walking tour of Aalborg was very interesting, the old post office that is next door to the Budolfi Cathedral was neat to see with all the holes in the tower for the carrier pigeons. The cathedral was small but lovely -...More

Really nice cathedral. Went I went which was after 1pm there was nobody in there apart from us and it was so quiet. Definitely worth visiting. There is parking there as well.

I've seen far more impressive cathedral's in Danmark so far. It's ok to have a quick look of you're walking past it but I wouldn't say it's a must see.

This is a beautiful church. The interior is quite plain as it’s Lutheran and it’s very white but there is plenty of interest to see and we were made to feel very welcome. Try to avoid going in when a tour party is in.

Even if not going inside, it is still beautiful to admire it from the outside and the history is interesting, too. It is named for a 650 AD Benedictine monk (English) who is known as St. Botolph. During the reformation in the mid-1500's, it became...More

The cathedral is exceedingly well looked after and well worth the time taken for a visit. Information is available in English. The organ is very good, being played at the time of our visit. They are creating a new cathedral precinct by demolishing the old...More

Went on here on a relaxing stroll around Aalborg, what an amazing building. It's striking from the outside and overlooks a lovely little cobbled square. Inside it was so wonderfully well kept. The artefacts, the pews, the pulpit were all a joy to behold. Well...More

This old church is very beautiful. Although there are no beautiful painted ceilings or stained glass, the church is worth a visit. The wood carvings are especially beautiful.
