A visit to H.C. Andersen House is a surprising and fascinating journey into the author’s creative universe – and his world-famous fairy tales. Beauty merges with imagination at the museum, where world-class architecture and spaces bring nature indoors, and provoke us to turn things on their head and speculate about today and tomorrow. Anderson comes alive
Amazing use of technology brought his stories to life. The music and voices were special. The gift shop allowed me to bring the stories home to the next generation of children Thank you.

    A Magical Experience
We enjoyed the fantastic architecture immensly including the beatiful garden. The museum experience was enchanting, if not magic, covering both the life of HC Andersen and many of his fairy tales. It was an sensory experience where the physical exhibits, the lighting, the sounds and the speaking became a magic whole and after 1½ hours we still wanted more. We highly recommend the Hans Christian Andersen museum in Odense for all to watch and experience.

    Magical History Museum
The museum is beautiful and the audio tour is informative, funny and magical. I learned all about Hans Christian Anderson’s life and works in a playful and peaceful way. The store has some great gifts and the cafe has delicious food. Worth a day trip from Copenhagen!

    Fun and Interactive
This was the best museum I have ever been to! As someone who is passionate about fairy tales, I loved it because of how unique and immersive it was. The audio felt like someone was standing right beside you. All the displays were so creative and the entire museum and each room felt purposeful. You can even interact with many of his fairy tales as you explore! I would recommend this to people of any age :)

Even if you do not know the writer in detail a great experience experience for all senses
We had a great time at the museum. Sure, we knew some of the fairytales, but we were skeptical in the beginning, whether we need a full museum on a fairytale writer. However, this was a great experience, stimulating the fantasy with a great audio guide. Highly recommended. Our children enjoyed it a lot.

    An incredibly emotional experience!!!
This is by far one of my best museum experiences I’ve had! The designers are artists, who decided to make an impact on the visitor in an emotional manner. They use in the audio guide and the visuals a dramatised, emotional language in telling what they want to tell. This place has left something in me. Highly recommended!

    Interactive museum
The museum is very interactive... the audio guide lets you enjoy the museum ok your own pace. I like the interactive fairy tales section... Even from the outside, you could enjoy the unique structures of the museum. The ticket includes admission to the childhood home of HC Andersen... and this really complete the tour of HC Andersen's life. Really enjoyable and a must visit place.

    Mixed feelings
The first part of the exhibit which tells the story of the author, is sort of boring. The second part which presents a selection of the fairy tales is enchanting, but only for an adult public. Please dedicate more room for the children who were so important to Hans Christian Andersen. It’s true the building is beautiful, but everything is in white and grey, I need some colours!

    A fairytale
Very good museum, interesting for both adults and children, nice and spacious. The fairytales are displayed in an interactive way and you get headphones with lovely voices that are very clear and understandable! Settings are beautiful, the building is amazing. All in all a great experience.

    amazing
The architecture of the building itself was absolutely phenomenal. Never seen such a breathtaking building for a museum. The exhibition itself was well structured. First you start with H.C life. Later you go on to interact with his stories. The whole time you have an audioguide which helps you explore the museum. The museum is perfect for the whole family, you even have a whole building where children can play, the cafe had a big selection of items from which you could choose from. All in all a big recommendation.

We only had 1 1/2 hrs to see as much as we could. Tickets are purchased in the H. C. Andersen museum which is a great place to start. Here one can read and see displays about his early childhood, inspiration, friends and adult life. After the museum, one can also see his childhood home and further on the house he was born in. These two homes show the impoverished circumstances he was born, despite which he developed his artistic abilities and an active imagination. We appreciated what we saw.

The house is very small and anticlimactic. I would recommend going if you purchase the whole H.C. Andersen experience (including the museum and other sites), but I don't think that it is worth a special journey. The area around the house is very cute for a stroll though.

Huge disappointment. I was expecting an exhibition almost finished, but with few parts not working. It was the reverse experience. The museum's objects were there and illuminated, but the whole technical side that should lift the experience to a new and better level did not work. The garden was inaccessible and not just unfinished as the website gives the impression of. We received a small compensation in the form of a discount code for 50% when the museum finally opens. We will probably come again at that time, and can give a new assessment. But for now, we all agreed that it was too unfinished for guests to enter.

Wait a year before visiting
Very disappointing and not worth the entrance fee
They are still waiting for microchips for the audiosystem (promised for february 2022) so no interactive museum yet.
Not worth the visit YET for english speaking tourist.
They should have waited another year before opening the museum

We visited Odense to see Hans Christian Andersen's birth place. He was known for his fairytails: The Emperor's new cloths, Little mermaid, The princess and the pea, Thumbelina, The little match girl, The snow queen etc etc. We have read these tales when our children were small. HC Andersen's fairy tales were translated into 125 languages.

We visited HC Andersen's childhood residence and the museum. His father was a cobbler and mother (house wife) was very poor. They worked so hard to raise their son's future. I became so sad to see his mother's tiny little kitchen! Parents always encouraged HC Andersen what he wanted to do in his life, something his parents just can dream of. Such a marvelous sacrifice they did for their son.

HC Andersen wrote books, traveled a lot in Europe, read books to small children, cut paper art. He never got married. HC Andersen is an iconic Danish writer who made Odense and Denmark known to the whole world. Danish people took care of their cultural heritage. People visit to Odense from whole world because of HC Andersen.

Spend time to read the story of him at the museum and his residence. Everyone were obsessed to the mirror which showed any person as an Emperor (modern technology). Great fun for children and adults. In every person lives an "Emperor", a remarkable illustration. Absolutely a must if you are in Odense. Suitable for children, adults in any age. Reasonable entrance fee.

Do not entertain sorrow or give it a chance to remain with you throughout your life, an excellent advice from HC Andersn. Thank you!

Don't Even think of going if you have a hearing disability. The set-up is that everyone walks around with their own set of headphones. A person with poor healing would not have understood anything.
My Child, aged 11, didn't understand anything during the exhibition. Everything is in loose fragments and very hard to connect to make sense of. Maybe, if you already know everything about HC Andersen you will get your memory refreshed, but if not, be prepared to experience only random fragments.
We don't need to go again and definitely do not recommend the museum to anyone below 30 or above 60 years of age.

We loved this museum and don’t quite understand all the negative reviews.

We didn’t have significant issues with the headsets. Occasionally we had to move around a little for it to detect the audio but that was all. We had two children with us (aged 9 and 12) and both loved it. The 9 year old did find some of the fairytale section tricky to follow but was fine with a little guidance.

If you go expecting a museum in the traditional sense with lots of text to read and objects to look at you will be disappointed. You are unlikely to come away having learnt lots in a sequential way. But if you go with an open mind and a willingness to engage creatively there’s quite a high chance you’ll leave delighted and inspired.

If there was room for improvement it was perhaps in making best use of the additional spaces (the house where Andersen was born) and the commemorative hall to display additional things from the museum’s collection.

Overall though, we enjoyed our experience and would recommend it (oh and if you have children aged 12 and under don’t miss the indoor play area with wonderful costumes, play houses etc).

The new building is an impressive, delightful exhibition space that holds so much potential for telling a compelling story.

We were therefore very disappointed when the exhibition itself didn't fill the space with the magic of the story, neither enlightening us with details of HC Andersen's life, nor delighting us with the fairy tales he is so famour for. We left after 90 minutes knowing just a little more, a little confused and fairly bored. What a wasted opportunity!

Most of the exhibition takes minimalism to an unhelpful extreme, using a lot of black and white with just hints of colour. There is little text to read, as the exhibition uses an audio system that is meant to let you move about and get relevant information or input. But the audio system is just not good enough to do what the designers intended: It is sometimes too sensitive to a little movement, interrupting one narrative with another, and other times stubbornly refuses to play anything at all.

It also is sometimes hard to know when the audio is finished and where to go next to get a cohesive story, maybe because there isn't one. As with much of the exhibition, it feels fragmented, bitty.

In a few places, there were artifacts that were interesting, but in one place at least (with the busts) they were inside white boxes with tiny viewing holes. I found it very hard to bend enough to see any of those - please don't hide them.

A few things were cool: The section with objects that told their story was cool and interesting in a poetic way. But the way it's presented, don't try to take your kids, they will be really bored.

This feels like an exhibition that tries too hard to be clever, cerebral and high tech, and falls flat as a result. Even the huge fairy tales area at the end disappointed in being fragmented and just a bit weird. I'd have loved recreations or even an interestingly arranged reading area to be able to read the stories, or interesting summaries, or snippets of them.

In summary, the building is gorgeus - 5 stars - but the overall experience is just not good enough. I'd give it 2.5 stars overall if I could, but I have to choose, so 2 stars it is. The HC Andersen Childhoom Home is much simpler and smaller, but also much more interesting in how it's presented, and has real soul that this new one sadly does not.
