This is the largest and main Square in Zante Town. This  expansive square is located on the seafront in the Port area of the Town. We have recently visited here, in July, on two separate occasions and were surprised how empty the square was, it was practically deserted. One of the dominating features of the Square is the large Statue Dionysios Solomos in the centre of the Square. He is accredited with writing the words of what became the Greek national anthem. The second most striking Statue is the Statue of Freedom. This bronze statue depicts a woman holding a laurel wreath aloft with both hands, facing out to sea. There are a plethora of other statues dotted around the Squre, commemorating people famous for a variety of reasons, including poets, anatomists and politicians. The Square is paved with a variety of different shapes and styles of slabs, There are a number of historic and grand buildings that are around the square. The most famous is the Church of Saint Nikolaos of Molos, it dates from 1561. It  survived the disasterous 1953 earthquake. Additionally, the Patron Saint of the island , Saint Dionysios served here as a monk. There is also the Byzantine Museum and the Cultural Centre of Zakynthos - home to the town's library, an art gallery and  the town’s cinema. There are also some restaurants with seating so dinners can dine out in the Square. There is also a small amphitheatre in the Square along with all it's other features.

Great square with great views out over the surrounding area. Great just to sit down and take it all in. This is a hub in the city

Just a place like any place...

...sorting to write home about. In general, Zakynthos town was not really exciting. Many many many tourist shops and not really a lot of quality stuff to shop. The port is nice, tho.

What a lovely place.

I came here last Thursday on the fun train with my young son, as I had promised him a trip into Zante Town.

It is a very picturesque place to visit and have a nice browse around the shops and cafes and to view the area at a relaxed pace. I even took a few pictures to get printed and framed.

Well worth an afternoon out to visit this lovely corner of the town.

Newly revamped square has lost a bit of its character
Jul. 2019 • Couples
We think it was 2 years ago when they decided to tear up the old square and replace it with what it is today. Bright and modern looking but lacking any character. Just off the square is the lovely church and also plenty of restaurants nearby

Center point of activity

The cruise ship’s tender boats bring you right to the end of the pier off this square. Wide open and sunny, there is zero shade to be found. Couple of lovely statues are in the square. A few young kids were kicking a soccer ball around today.

Entire square had to be rebuilt after the last major earthquake in 1953.

Nice place for relaxing

This is the central square of Zakynthos with many different coffee shops and restaurants, and it's nice to relax with your family and children. There you could visit the Solomo's Museum and the byzantin museum

A must see, plus lots of places around the square for a bite to eat and a drink.
The harbour is just over the road so you can sit and watch the ferries come and go.
