On our Holland America tour in Corfu, we stopped in Kanoni to view the Convent of Vlacherna and Mouse Island (aka Pontikonsi). The convent is probably best known to North Americans as a location in the James Bond Movie, “For Your Eyes Only”.

It's very popular among the tourists as the small monastery has a nice location on a tiny island, but the interior is rather uninspiring. The other thing attracting many people is the possibilty to watch the landing airplanes as the monastery is a stone's throw from the Corfu airport runway. Just check flightradar24 for the incoming planes and wait either close to the monastery or on the narrow platform connecting Vlacherna with Perama.

One of the best landmarks of Corfu! It definitely worth a visit! During summer you can go to Pontikonisi, or Mouse island with a little boat, in 2-4 minutes for as little as 1,5-2 euros per person. Inside the monastery, there is a little shop selling little souvenirs. One of the best parts is the little ducks and cats hanging around the monastery and eating bread from the guests. I highly recommend a visit there!

Friday 30th August and we visited this small Monastery which is situated literally at the end of the runway of Corfu Airport. It is just over 4 kilometres from the Town.

It dates back to the 17th or 18th Century and was in use until 1980. It was previously occupied by Nuns, who have left, leaving only one old Nun remaining. It is now only used now for celebrations and as a tourist attraction

We parked up in the car park nearby and we walked along the harbour jetty leading out to Island where the Monastery is located. It sits in Chalkiopoulos (Χαλκιοπουλοσ) Lagoon with Mouse Island, Pontikonisi, in front.

We entered into a small paved courtyard, through a door in the bell tower, passing underneath the two bells, adding to the unique charm of the place.

A whitewashed building with crinkled terracotta tiles. It is a small Church, so limited numbers in at one time as well as social distancing measures.

At the rear of the Church there is a simple altar screen, reredos, with a small plain altar behind it. Placed in the centre of the altar is a tabernacle with  a red dome, a crucifix hangs above it and religious paintings around the walls.

In keeping with the rest of the Church the altar screen is simply decorated with religious paintings. Strips of red ribbon were draped around the Church, must have been a recent celebration here.

Religious painted images and icons were around the walls of the Church.

Directly opposite the door to the Church, there is another door which opens to a small chamber, with just enough space for a tray where visitors can light a candle. Due to the heat from the candles, many were twisted and distorted making odd shapes. Amusingly it had its own extractor fan.

There is a shop there selling icons, religious pictures and souvenirs.

Interesting association between old and new. Church under the landing path. Not God landing from the sky but planes loaded with tourists.

You might recognize the rather particular image of the island from the James Bond movie ‘For your eyes only’ from 1981!!!

The best way to visit this place is going at sunset, is a very relaxing spot, with a spectacular view on the see and is peculiar for being next to the airport. When the planes land it seems they're almost landing on your head! :D besides there are many restaurants and cafes where you can sit to have dinner and enjoy the view. Recommended for an evening out.

Such a fun stroll on what seems like endless bridges on the water especially as it is so close to the airport that you can almost touch the wheels and feel the wind.

Not only because it is a most attractive Monastry but - because it is directly below the main Corfu Airport flightpath - Vlacherna is one of Corfu’s best known monastries.

It is also easy to access and many hundreds/thousands of people visit the area daily to watch the incoming/departing flights. As such, they probably don’t give the Monastry the respect it deserves but it - together with the attractive Gift Shop ( as well as the cats and ducks - at least Inthink they are ducks!) are well worth visiting!!
