- R_TheReaderRio de Janeiro, RJ504 contributionsStunning views from a byzantine ruinIt takes quite a drive uphill to reach the entrance to Angelocastro, and then you have to climb on foot. But it is absolutely worth it! The walls and some buildings still survive (including a small church still in service). The castle stands at the top of a cliff with views to the blue Ionian Sea at a ragged coast where a few small sandy beaches share the landscape with a rocky relief where the waves crash. - MizzLibraGrafenwohr, Germany106 contributionsDefinitely worth the hike/climbTo make the most of our day, we arrived just before 10 AM, whren Angelokastro opens for visitors. Although a few others were just arriving, too, we found a parking spot immediately. In our family , that went on this trip together, we were between 22 years old and pretty fit and late 50s with a health condition affecting stamina and physical fitness. We all made it to the top without entirely being out of breath. And the hike/climb turned out to be well worth it. Besides some ruins to see, you are also rewarded with a breathtaking view over the island of Corfu as well as the Ionian Sea.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 1 December 2023
- Spencer C49 contributionsFantastic viewsVisited in May which meant parking was no problem. Only one road in and out which is very narrow so a good time to visit Castle itself and the views are something else!!! Well worth the steep walk up. Anyone with nervous disposition to heights may not want to look over the edge and it’s a long drop to the sea!! I had wobbly legs on many occasions!! But still loved it and worth the visitVisited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 May 2024

We combined a visit here with a trip to Paleokastritsa monastery, which you get good views of from the top. After reading other reviews about limited parking, we parked in Krini and walked the hilly 1km to the castle, but we could easily have parked there as we were there quite early, but the car park and the road filled up quickly when more people arrived when we were coming down, but there is also more parking at the top of the hill as you go down to the castle. It’s a steep climb up steps to the castle and hard work on a hot day, but there’s a taverna there so we had a drink afterwards to cool off. The castle itself is largely ruins and involves some scrambling over rocks so with that and the stairs up I would recommend wearing walking boots. At the top there are 2 churches, one of which is underground.

The drive up through Lakones is a challenge, following a coach is a bonus as it helps to clear your way! The village traffic lights take 7.5 mins, so be patient :)
There is a small car park below the castle, next to the taverna, but we parked in a roadside space & walked down.
Small fee for entrance €3 (?), the climb up to the ruins is easy and has views on all sides, the colours of the water below are spectacular. Even with a full car park the ruins themselves didn't feel crowded so it was easy to explore and enjoy.
After your visit, stop at the taverna for an ice cream or snack - friendly staff and super-clean toilets.

I did this path last September 2022 when temperatures were good. I am 70 years old and managed it though parts are tricky underfoot and steep. It is easy to Google “Lears Path” and see directions with photos. There are two ways to do this. 1. The whole walk from the village of Paleokastritsa, 90 minutes, up Lear’s Path to Lakones village and then along the main road, turning left through Krini and downhill to the car park where one then has to walk up the steep steps to the castle. I don’t like heights and that climb was a test. Views from the top amazing but dizzying for me. 2. Drive from Paleokastritsa up the newer road to Krini and down the hill to the car park ( you can approach Krini from the other side from Makrades if you are driving from the north). Lear’s path from Paleo is for the main part large stones underfoot which can turn an ankle so do wear good footwear. Other travellers report scorpions or the occasional snake so another reason for good footwear. From Lakones to Krini there is not much in the way of a roadside footpath so be wary of traffic. Recommended? Absolutely. On the road from Lakones to Angelokastro you get amazing views looking south and you can even see the fortress in Corfu Town. As you walk you will catch glimpses of Angelokastro through the trees, just whetting the appetite to finish the walk. There are a few restaurants and cafes on the route from Lakones but take water for the initial walk from Paleo. For the return, care on Lears Path as the stones can be slippy even when dry and the steepness can make it tough on the legs. Alternatively, just follow the new road down from Lakones to Paleo, a longer walk but gentler on the legs. Great walk. I loved it. Green coach from Corfu Town or Gouvia to Paleo is cheap and takes 45 mins/35 mins.

One of the best points to visit in Corfu. The castle remembers old times and it is really well preserved ruins.
Entrance fee is really symbolic. 3 euro if I remember correct. Means less then coffee.
The stony path towards castle shows how difficult it was to get here for enemies.
Breathtaking views are the best award for hard climbing :-)
Absolutely recommended.

Lovely drive, brisk walk, amazing views and definitely well worth a visit. The walk up is nice and easy with an occasional slippery worn out step. The views up the ruins shows what Corfu is all about though.
Parking is tiny, but the road only leads to here. so, you can always park on the side of the road.
The only signal on the road has 7.5 mins of switching time. But definitely, wait. the roads through the village is narrow.

We stayed in Mayor Grotta Verda, which is very nice because it has a beach sand (not rubble) and it has a spectacular view. We ate at Akrogiali, a small taverna nearby (the food at the hotel was good, but there was excellent!). We visited a little Palaiokastritsa- wonderful but very crowded- and Corfu, which is a beautiful mediterranean city.

Ancient castle on a hill, giving you a great view of the surrounding area. The drive is ok, although roads are narrow, but with a small rented car there is always enough space. Luckily there was enough parking space when visiting, perhaps peak season this might be a problem.

13th century Byzantine castle on Corfu - this one has a spectacular location. High on the rock, 300 metres over the sea. That means you need some climbing from the parking (tiring) but you will be rewarded with great views to the sea and the island. The remains of the castle include small church, underground chapel and walls. Entry is EUR 3 per person. Remember that it's closed on Tuesdays.

Very pretty walk from the kiosk up to the ruins. It took 10-15 minutes and is not too hard - it was hot but not roasting though. Stunning views from the top, absolutely worth it. I imagine the parking would be very busy in the summer so maybe go early or later.

Hi, i would like to know how can i get to the castle if i take a bus to Paleokastritsa.
Thanks.
Written 4 August 2018
Sorry I cannot answer this as we hired a car and drove ourselves. Certainly Angelokastro is in the same part of the island as Paleokastritsa so a taxi there may be possible. Best wishes!

а как добраться до крепости из Палеоскарицы или Керкиры?
Written 23 September 2017
