The city is located on a lake, with beautiful mountains in the background. The fortress is on a hill from where you can see the picturesque surroundings. There are three museums in the fortress, the largest of which is Archaeological as well as a cozy restaurant. Near the Ioannina is the Dodoni site, the famous oracle of Zeus.

The Ioannina Castle (Greek: Κάστρο Ιωαννίνων) is the fortified old town of the
city of Ioannina in northwestern Greece. The present fortification dates largely to the reconstruction under Ali Pasha in the late Ottoman period, but incorporates also pre-existing Byzantine and ancient Greek elements.

........another set of old walls. Well, of course, that's what it is, but they are impressive walls in places. Best thing, though, is that once you pass through one of the gates into the enclosed area, it's a little oasis of peace and calm right in the middle of Ioannina. Some lovely residential areas, no traffic, no noise - it's great.

We felt navigation might have been helped by more signage, but no complaints.

The "inner, inner" area as you might call it is even more peaceful and rather lovely. This is the area where the museums are located - the Silversmithing Museum, the Byzantine Museum, and the Treasury.

Well worth a visit.

Ioannina a university town with not a lot going for it apart from the students who invade the foreshore in the evenings which livens the place up. Lake Pamvotis a ecological disaster with the green algae which is now proven to be a health hazard. The locals will not even eat fish from the lake, as for the island if you can stand the stench from the lake just a rundown village selling normal tourist rubbish Our advice is visit Zagorohoria and avoid this city.

The lake, the castle, the mountain views are really relaxing and amazing the same time. The city as well. A nice castle with a beautiful inner yard, well refurbished and astonishing view . If you plan a trip to Ioannina, don't miss it .

The Museum and the castle of Ali Pasha Tepelena, (who as an Albanian ruler under the Ottoman empire), that I visited, was a great place and I would like to call it magnificent regard on historical importance. It was a well-preserved sight surrounded by welcoming people around that gave us even desserts to taste.
During my two-day visit to the city, the cicerone didn't lie, never told the full story but discarded everything about Albanians, and their magnificent costumes and his activity related to an independent Albanian state. Lord Bayron had enthusiasm for the extravagance of Albanian dress during his visit to Ioannina (Janina) in the letter he wrote to his mother about his purchases: “I have some very ‘Magnifique’ Albanian dresses". Nothing was told during the visit about Pasha's and Albanians\Arvanites Great Contribution to Greek Independence even though the little library outside was full of books regarding Arvanites' contribution. They have removed the full name of him from all the city except his (Ferman) death sentence which written in full, Ali Pasha of Tepelena.

Area inside the castle walls is very picturesque and nice with cobbled roads and paveways. The Acropolis area 'its kale' is an interesting area with impressive old buildings and fabulous views over the city and the lake.

Nice for an afternoon walk.

Lovely views great atmosphere. Museum was interesting. The staff member was a little intimidating but probably due to language barrier. Was not expecting the huge number of tourists and the traffic chaos.

Surely worth dedicating a full day visiting the castle along with the old city around it. I suppose the castle you will find debris of old buildings, the its kale region, the old mosque, the byzantine museum, the grave of Ali pasa and a cafe, not to mention the 360 view of the town
