Chora is the ancient hill top village built around the Monastery of St John. Narrow cobbled streets lead between old houses, many now restored holiday homes. Views appear randomly but each is spectacular over the hillside, windmills and sea.
There are cafes and small shops. Parking is just below the village. Taxi from the port at Skala is inexpensive and can take in a stop at the Cave of the Apocalypse.

Neat village but not much was open when we were there. I suppose that is because it was Greek Orthodox Easter Saturday. Had we picked a normal weekend it probably would have been more lively. The narrow alleyways were neat though. Also, a beautiful view from the hill.
If you are up for the walk, find the ancient cobblestone road and take it back down the hill to Skala.

Chora is the capital of Patmos lying in the south central part of the island and only a few km south of Skala, the main port of Patmos.
Magnificent old white-washed houses, narrow streets and alleyways, all of which date back to the 15th century.
With only a few shops, taverns and small squares, hidden away through the tiny cobbled streets, it is more peaceful and not as busy.

The beautiful Hora of Patmos is a jewelry. The beautiful graphic skittles travel the visitor's pleasure to the island's local. There you will find everything, coffee, restaurants, gift shops or you can take just a walk.

We enjoyed strolling around the cobbled streets of this delightful little village which effectively surrounds the well known Monastery of St John and doesn’t appear to have changed much over the centuries.

We did not go there at night but once in the afternoon, once before noon because of the visit of the monastry. The neigbourhood seems totally dead except a few cafes and a few souvenir shops. There is a place where there is one bar and a restaurant in front of the bar. The houses are white and you can see narrow streets but this can be seen in many greek islands. The view on the island is not bad but not very interesting.

A perfect picture from down below, of a whitewashed village perched on a hilltop, crowned by a castle (that is the monastery of St John).
Buses run a few times a day from the port in Skala - it's only a few kilometres but a steep climb - which for those who accept the challenge, there is the old stone path (our choice).
There was only one taverna open late morning when we arrived (Jimmy's Balcony) close to the edge of the village from the road from Skala - they were busy but happy to serve us just drinks.
The village itself is a maze of narrow alley ways between close, tight knit buildings leading in all directions and crisis-crossing over each other - it's very easy to get lost, you know where you are by checking the view when you reach an edge of the village! Lots and lots more steps and climbing as you walk around the village itself.
There are two tavernas in the central square - both closed during the day, but the chefs were cooking in Vaggelis and very kindly gave us water.
The views from around the village, in all directions are absolutely breathtaking.
A visit to Chora is a 'must' during your stay in Patmos, not just to explore the village itself, but to visit the windmills and the monastery of St John - and to wonder at the beautiful typically Greek village that seems to have escaped tourism.

Chora huddles at the feet of the magnifiscent Monastary of Saint John. Steep streets, narrow alleyways, quaint shops with everything from the ordinary tourists knick-knack to beautiful artisan work. There are very nice restaurants to be found, too, typically with the very simple and extremely tasty traditional Greek cuisine. The undisputed highlight of Chora must be the above mentioned Monastery, but there are so many surprising sights and views in this very old town.

When coming via cruises ship, try and take a Taxi up to the monastery (8 Euros). If you would like for the Taxi to stop at the cave of the apokalypse and monastery and wait for you, they're asking 30 euros per cab. We just took a Taxi up, went to the museum and walked around the cute, quiet and narrow streets of chora after. You can either walk all the way back down to the harbor, or call for another Taxi to take you back down. Much cheaper and you're not being herded.

We really enjoyed walking through the narrow streets in Chora. A lot of gift shops offering quality items, Cafés and restaurants. No cars allowed, therefore everyone was chatting and enjoying the beautiful view of Patmos from high above.
There are a couple of ‘crowded’ streets with bars, but they can easily be avoided

I will recommend you to rent a scooter or an ATV
That way you can also see some more of the beautiful island
I always rent my bike at Billis motor rent
Billis is situated at the waterfront. Just walk along the water, and
you will see the place.
He has good bikes and he is a very nice man - he is not expensive either
Enjoy the beauties of Patmos ❤️
