Wasn't prepared for the carnage at the Port but actually it's not that much different from Victoria bus ststion in London...except you're in paradise! So be prepared. When you get herded off that ferry there will be many vehicles, buses, people. We missed the bus so we went to one of the taxi stations. We were charged 50 euros each....then piled onto a mini bus.
Upon our return to the Port from the hotel, we had a mini bus to ourselves and the price was only 30 Euro for both!
Also at the Port are several eating and drinking options.

If like us, you arrive by ferry, this is where you first step foot on Santorini. There wasn’t anything to see or do here and it’s not even particularly attractive.
Unlike the charming old ports on some islands, this one is busy and crowded, with streams of tourists arriving and leaving and trying to find transport. We didn’t linger here.
Instead we headed off as quickly as we could to our accommodation in Fira.
We were very pleased that we had pre-arranged a taxi through our hotel
The taxi was €30 (payable to the driver at the end).
This was by far and away the simplest way to get out of the heat and chaos and get straight to our accommodation in Fira.
We were picked up at the port and dropped off beside the the Orthodox Metropolitan Church, near the main bus stop.
It is worth noting that if you are staying in Fira on the caldera slopes, a taxi won’t be able to take you to direct to your door because they can’t drive down the narrow, cobbled streets. Instead, our driver rang the hotel when he dropped us off and a porter came to meet us with a trolley to take our bags the rest of the way.
In hindsight, we could have just as easily caught the bus from the port and the hotel porter could have met us there instead. It would have been considerably cheaper.

The sweatiest and most unorganised port I have ever used. It lacks all kind of minimal services a good port needs. Here the things I was literally astonished by:
1. Dangerous connections with the rest of the island: zigzag roads with little or no guardrails
2. No free shadow: you gotta go to some cafes to avoid serious sunburn
3. No modern means of displaying arrivals: ferries are announced by a guy shouting the ferry name in a barely understandable English.
4. Overcharging cafes and restaurants: they all charge extremely high prices for basic products / services
It is very disappointing that all the money spent by the hordes of tourists are not invested in improving this extremely weak infrastructure.

This Port is bustling, just like Mykonos, because of the island's popularity. We arrived from seajet from Paros. There are a lot of private transportation companies who try to get you from the moment you get off the ferry. We had booked our transfer with our hotel from the Port. The best advice I can give any traveller. The most unpleasant part of our trip was the taxi drivers or private transfer; they tried to rip us off. It is a tiny port with little shade. It was a hot day; ensure you have sunscreen and a hat on hot days. There are a lot of restaurants with umbrellas so you can get some food or a drink. There is only one gate for departure; therefore, you must pay attention to your boarding. There weren't any announcements.

Worst place to be. There is no shadow no chairs full of cars smog and noice. Not at all organized a mess in all the aspects . Food and drink at the port very expensive an quality don’t reflect the island. If you have a car there isn’t a place to park. This is not a nice picture for the island.

We were travelling on the Norwegian Gem with the intention of travelling up the stairs on the Cable cart, but when we arrived we were met with a massive queue in the blistering heat woth no shade. Due to this we decided to walk up the steps and it has been one of the worst experiences I have ever had.
There is no organisation for the pedestrians and donkeys which causes confusion and unsafe conditions. The stairs are slippy and smelly as they are coated in heaps of donkey pee and poo which is almost impossible to miss. (Please do not use the donkeys! Read reviews 'Santorini Donkeys').
There is no shade during the entire track and no access to water meaning that the journey is very grulling.
On the way back, the queue for the cable car was even longer than before; stretching for near half a mile! Due to this we were forced to walk down the steps again, which were slippy once again due to the continued donkey droppings.
This area should never be used as a port entry for cruise ships as it simply cannot cope or provide sufficient support for tourists.

Unorganized seems to be a kind description of this place. Sweaty, lacking shaded seating and scorching. All of the restaurants seem to have lost the Internet connection when you are about to pay by card, so they either make you pay by cash or redirect you to the nearest atm. A lot of shouting taxidrivers who are ready to rip you off when you are at your most vulnerable. Tired, sweaty, and trying to navigate the chaos of getting through to your hotel. Worst port I’ve experienced, ever. Sorry Santorini, but with all the income that tourism brings you, you should have figured out a better infrastructure than this.

I was yelled at for walking away from the ferry even though it wasn’t my ferry (by a couple of workers) and everyone tried to direct me somewhere. I was there very early and already ready to board so I didn’t need anyone’s help and when I told them that, they kept trying to direct me to the ferry or the offices. Very irritating experience. I think because I’m a young girl everyone thought I needed help but no one listened when I told them I didn’t. I hate this place.

At the exit of the boat, a car rental took the luggage of the children telling us that there was only one place to rent a car. They rented me a car 100 euros a day and it was a wreck. You pay first in cash and then you're surprised. Someone in the parking lot discreetly told me to film the car in 360. Although the car was scratched from everywhere, they tried to make me pay extra for restitution. Do not rent at princess rent a car, they are dishonest people and their actions damage the image of this wonderful island.

Our hotel set up a transfer for us from Oia to the port, so we were lucky enough to have an excellent driver that told us where to wait and what to do. That undoubtedly helped make our experience a bit better. The drive down was long and windy and yes, once you get to the bottom it's pretty busy. Lucky for us, we knew where our ferry was going to depart from and we grabbed a bite to eat while we waited.
On our way back into Santorini the port was a bit more chaotic. We were on the Blue Star Delos which is a huge ferry, and everyone was scrambling off to find their transfer, rent a car, or get a taxi. We were lucky enough to be one of the first ones off and got the last taxi to the airport.
Overall, we didn't have a bad experience at all.

Transfer service from Athinios Port to Oia? Our hotel wants to charge 50 euro per person in shared vehicle which seems expensive for an 8 mile ride. We used the Taxi Beat app in Athens which worked well for us & they don’t have service in Santorini so looking for other transfer options.

I am leaving now from Paris arriving to Santorini port at 12pm... what is the best company to rent a car today?
Written 29 July 2019
You can take a local bus into Fira for approx 2.30€. And rent a car from Fira. People will try and make you pay loads for a shuttle into town but the local bus usually comes every 30-40mins. KTEA BUS

Hi - we are thinking of going over to Santorini from Crete for a night .. sounds chaos !!?
Are the ferry tickets cheaper at the port / or online ?
Where would you say would be the nearest place to the Port . sounds like Fira is too far away ? What about Perissas (?)
Thanks in advance

Ferry Hopper website for tickets is your best bet. And double check if you need to print or pick up the tickets at the port before hand.
I stayed in Oia (further than Fira) and we got to the ferry in 25mins. Fira will be about 15 mins and it’s best to organize a local taxi to get there on time.
