I first visited Amorgos about thirty years ago, mainly because I had seen a picture of the famous monastery (60 room building half way up a 300 metre vertical cliff). Have been back almost every year since then - the people are wonderful and it is clearly my favourite of the 44 Greek islands I have sampled. Visit and you... More

As the Internet if full of descriptions of the historical and other similar aspects of the monastery, I would like to offer the readers some practical tips for a visit to this marvelous place. It is open until noon (1 pm), so be sure to be at the bottom of the steps towards the monastery (there are about a thousand... More

Dramatically positioned on the side of a cliff with a stunning view of the surrounding coast, this old monastery is well worth a visit on the beautiful island of Amorgos! Bit of a walk up steps to get there so might be tricky for people with mobility issues but well worth the walk. If you time it right you can... More

Made it to the top and the way this is built into the cliff face is amazing. The views are stunning from the windows. Pity only a very small part is accessible which after climbing all the way up feels a bit of an anti-climax. Women must wear skirts, which is strictly enforced, even if this means pulling the leg... Stunning location - how it's survived for 1000 years suggests divine intervention. Photos cannot convey the monastery and its setting. You have to go and see it for your selves

The hike up here is killer but pretty cool nonetheless. Once you get inside you can't take any photos of the actual church part. The priest's helper gives you a water and there's trinkets to purchase inside.

I went to Hozoviotissa with my parents, sister and aunts during the summer. It is a wonderful place. The monastery is dramatically placed on a clift facing the Mediterranean sea. You have to plan your visit in the sense that it takes a while to reach the stone path that leads to the monastery. And you have to take into... More

A group of us stopped here. After huffing and puffing our way up, we were greeted with a group of sickly, unneutered cats, then entered the vestibule to change into our mandatory weird skirt things the women are required to wear. We toured through the monastery (no pics allowed in most areas I think) and were at one point served... More

The drive to the base of the monastery was a beautiful winding road with great views of the coast. The walk up the stairs was great and do able for anyone! The monk we meet was very friendly and happy to sit and talk with all of us.

Panagia Hozoviotissa, in Amorgos island, built on he rock 300 m. above sea level.. 1000 stairs for a breathtaking view, the monks are waiting for friendly conversation, raki and loukoumi, you look from the windows the big blue and travel in spiritual thoughts.. and when you go down-which is much easier- there is beach of Agia Anna waiting, where you...
