Quite a busy place , bustling with many tourists . Lots of cafes & shops along the harbor and narrow streets . Picturesque harbor area . The parking area is a bit of a walk to the town center . Enjoyed our visit but I think Chania Old Town has a bit more charm . Do visit here though if in the area.

You enter the Old Town through one of the old Venetian Arches and you are immediately taken back to ancient times. The old buildings along with the remnants of the Venetian Fortress's skirting wall are present. The narrow cobbled streets are full of life! Shops, restuarants, cafe's, ice-cream parlours are all mixed into this bustling maze of narrow streets. There is also The Archaeological Museum of Rethymno which is situated in the old Church of San Francesco. Walk through the streets and you will come across the Rimondi Fountain and then onto the Venetian Fortrezz Castle. A great place to explore!

Having spent 3 days in Chania and now on the second day in Rethymno we have found the people friendly and helpful and have enjoyed walking round the old towns which are very attractive Restaurants were on the whole good and our favourite has been RakiBaraki in Rethymno to date. One thing however which is worth mentioning is our visit today to the Rethymno Archaeological museum. Having an interest in the culture and the history of the Cretans I was looking forward to the visit and asked about the entrance fee on arrival as it was unclear It had a reduced fee and a normal fee which I assumed related to age. However this was not the case. In fact members of the EU could visit at the reduced fee but those outside ie UK had to pay double! . The difference was 2 Euros so it wasn’t for the money but I resented that my Greek husband could get in for 2 Euros and they wanted 4 for me Maybe I was over sensitive but surely this is discrimination and shouldn’t be happening? Worth checking if you are interested in a visit as in my mind it shouldn’t be allowed ! Overall still enjoying Crete and would recommend.

Took a bus from Chania to spend a day in Rethymon. Another lovely Venitian harbour. Smaller than Chania but still an interesting town. Much more a resort town, has a different vibe to Chania. Wander away through from the harbour into the back streets to see ancient churches, lovely venitian architecture and more. The fort is a must, views are amazing. The modern port is a working port so ships arriving. Walking from the bus station into town along the sea wall under the fort, before the harbour, you arrive at some restuarants. We ate there and had great sea food, so fresh.

Amazing ! An accumulation of feelings throw you in another world. From all the Old Towns in Crete , Rethymno's Palia Poli(The Old Town) is special and this is the merit of it's people who live here and of authorities which preserved this real piece of history. You can feel it only walking on it's streets, not only the commercial ones! Some people loves Chania, some people loves Heraklion, but from my oppinion, Rethymno is something else in all this commercial world! Feel it ! It's old, but still very young and beautiful!

Many of the restaurants and shops were closed when we visited one evening in March but it was still a nice and picturesque old town to walk around. We spent about an hour walking around and an hour having dinner here during a road trip we took around Crete from Heraklion. Many of the Venetian structures are preserved and still used today and it has one of the most intact castles/fortresses on the island of Crete. I also saw a lot of friendly cats as we walked around. This would be a hotspot for tourists come summer time because it seems most things close up for the winter months and there seems to be lots of spots that are well maintained and ready to open. There are many spots to check out around Crete and this town is worth a stop if you have the time.

Lovely old town. Great bars and restaurants. Watch out for the ones trying to get you to eat and drink there. Expensive and not very good. The laid back friendly ones are much better.

Caught a bus in to Rethymno dropped at the Old town. Lovely just walking around, plenty souvenir shops. Plenty restaurants to eat at! We walked around the harbour and went to the beach. There are plenty chairs to relax, no charge, sit down and order food and drink and the chairs is ours. A large cold beer €4.50, great value. The beach is clean and the sea is wonderful. I had beach shoes on for the pebbles in the sea.

We went twice to Rethymno once we strolled the old town and second to swim in its beach then dinner at Achinos restaurant. It was a very hot day that day. The tent at the beach is free but you have to order food or drink. Some charge per person. Shop around before you settle on a place. The town is small and cute. There is an Ottoman mosque that was changed to church and closed. Lots of antique shops and many many charming cafes. We bought souvenirs and ate delicious ice cream.
