    Rethymnon Old Town
Quite a busy place , bustling with many tourists . Lots of cafes & shops along the harbor and narrow streets . Picturesque harbor area . The parking area is a bit of a walk to the town center . Enjoyed our visit but I think Chania Old Town has a bit more charm . Do visit here though if in the area.

    An atmospheric place!
You enter the Old Town through one of the old Venetian Arches and you are immediately taken back to ancient times. The old buildings along with the remnants of the Venetian Fortress's skirting wall are present. The narrow cobbled streets are full of life! Shops, restuarants, cafe's, ice-cream parlours are all mixed into this bustling maze of narrow streets. There is also The Archaeological Museum of Rethymno which is situated in the old Church of San Francesco. Walk through the streets and you will come across the Rimondi Fountain and then onto the Venetian Fortrezz Castle. A great place to explore!

Enjoyable stay but with some surprises
Having spent 3 days in Chania and now on the second day in Rethymno we have found the people friendly and helpful and have enjoyed walking round the old towns which are very attractive Restaurants were on the whole good and our favourite has been RakiBaraki in Rethymno to date. One thing however which is worth mentioning is our visit today to the Rethymno Archaeological museum. Having an interest in the culture and the history of the Cretans I was looking forward to the visit and asked about the entrance fee on arrival as it was unclear It had a reduced fee and a normal fee which I assumed related to age. However this was not the case. In fact members of the EU could visit at the reduced fee but those outside ie UK had to pay double! . The difference was 2 Euros so it wasn’t for the money but I resented that my Greek husband could get in for 2 Euros and they wanted 4 for me Maybe I was over sensitive but surely this is discrimination and shouldn’t be happening? Worth checking if you are interested in a visit as in my mind it shouldn’t be allowed ! Overall still enjoying Crete and would recommend.

    Perfect little town
Took a bus from Chania to spend a day in Rethymon. Another lovely Venitian harbour. Smaller than Chania but still an interesting town. Much more a resort town, has a different vibe to Chania. Wander away through from the harbour into the back streets to see ancient churches, lovely venitian architecture and more. The fort is a must, views are amazing. The modern port is a working port so ships arriving. Walking from the bus station into town along the sea wall under the fort, before the harbour, you arrive at some restuarants. We ate there and had great sea food, so fresh.

    The pearl of Crete
Amazing ! An accumulation of feelings throw you in another world. From all the Old Towns in Crete , Rethymno's Palia Poli(The Old Town) is special and this is the merit of it's people who live here and of authorities which preserved this real piece of history. You can feel it only walking on it's streets, not only the commercial ones! Some people loves Chania, some people loves Heraklion, but from my oppinion, Rethymno is something else in all this commercial world! Feel it ! It's old, but still very young and beautiful!

    Sleepy Old Town in March
Many of the restaurants and shops were closed when we visited one evening in March but it was still a nice and picturesque old town to walk around. We spent about an hour walking around and an hour having dinner here during a road trip we took around Crete from Heraklion. Many of the Venetian structures are preserved and still used today and it has one of the most intact castles/fortresses on the island of Crete. I also saw a lot of friendly cats as we walked around. This would be a hotspot for tourists come summer time because it seems most things close up for the winter months and there seems to be lots of spots that are well maintained and ready to open. There are many spots to check out around Crete and this town is worth a stop if you have the time.

    Lovely old town
Lovely old town. Great bars and restaurants. Watch out for the ones trying to get you to eat and drink there. Expensive and not very good. The laid back friendly ones are much better.

    Great place to swim
Caught a bus in to Rethymno dropped at the Old town. Lovely just walking around, plenty souvenir shops. Plenty restaurants to eat at! We walked around the harbour and went to the beach. There are plenty chairs to relax, no charge, sit down and order food and drink and the chairs is ours. A large cold beer €4.50, great value. The beach is clean and the sea is wonderful. I had beach shoes on for the pebbles in the sea.

    Charming Rethymno
We went twice to Rethymno once we strolled the old town and second to swim in its beach then dinner at Achinos restaurant. It was a very hot day that day. The tent at the beach is free but you have to order food or drink. Some charge per person. Shop around before you settle on a place. The town is small and cute. There is an Ottoman mosque that was changed to church and closed. Lots of antique shops and many many charming cafes. We bought souvenirs and ate delicious ice cream.

We spent a day here, catching number 20 bus from A. Campos (cost only 1 euro 20cents each). Tip, take the bus to the bus station, it’s only a 15 minute walk to the Castle from here. Catch a bus back from the bus station too, as catching it from the old town probably means no seat!
We wandered around, after the castle, spent a nice hour drinking cool drinks from a cafe then had an amazing lunch with excellent portion sizes too, along the front. The visit starting to go downhill after walking through the old town. We went inside a jewellers to browse and had a torrid time with very pushy salespeople. Leaving there we walked up the road to another jewellery store and I pointed at a watch in the window (shouldn’t have pointed) as as soon as I did, a salesman leapt out of the door and was in my face saying I should try it on! It looks like I should buy it he said! We politely declined and walked away. This happened on all the occasions we walked into shops and stores, very pushy salespeople and we became worried about even glancing at anything, it got worse after two hours, to the point my daughter said she wanted to go home. It quite ruined the trip to Rethymno old town. I can understand salespeople wishing you to buy items from their shops, but when you exit a store to hear a shout “ sir, sir, come back here I must talk to you!” You wish you’d never gone in there in the first place.
Tip, visit the castle and fountains by all means but stick to your local shops ( more pleasant shopkeepers) and don’t point at anything in the old town.

My partner and I enjoyed a few hours in this lovely city. We started with a sightseeing train tour which allowed us to learn about some beautiful and prominent sights in the city. We then went into the fortress and enjoyed some beautiful views. There are some lovely restaurants and shops in the city and the beach looked beautiful. I would definitely return and possibly stay in this beautiful city.

Unfortunately not too many old architecture left from really old town. Most building although along narrow streets is rather new and not always build with taste of the details. On top of that apart from cafes and restaurants there is plenty of souvenir shops that take back the beauty of this place. The nicest place is old port without Chinese staff.

The venetian architecture was breathtaking. There were also a lot of shops where you could find almost any traditional or generic, trinket. Kind of overcrowded sometimes. But we really enjoyed strolling through the small alleys and took photos of variosu old buildings that stood there proudly amonst the modern cafes and modern shops.

Rethymno Old Town, a must visit for everyone. Dozens of little shops in the alleys, selling souvenirs, local goods as cheese, oil, mountain tea and hand picked herbs. You can shop for clothes, leather goods and anything else you need. Beautiful old houses in the narrow streets. Hotels, restaurants and cafeterias are everywhere. People are really friendly!

Old town and harbour were great. Lots of restaurants on the harbour front but check out side streets where you can get better value food. The vibes in the old town are similar to old town Chania.

The bus ride from Heraklion is a about 80 mins but easy ride as it is air-conditioned. I would recommend a trip to Rethymnon.

After visiting Rethymno 28 times, with our last visit being seven years ago, this stay was unfortunately disappointing. What was once a charming destination has now turned into an overcrowded tourist hotspot. The beaches, which used to be quiet and pleasant, are now completely filled with sunbeds, making it difficult to find a spot to simply enjoy the beach.
The crowds in Rethymno are overwhelming. Parking has become a nightmare, and the coastal road is constantly congested with traffic. Additionally, the prices for food have risen significantly, making it hard to truly enjoy a meal in the city. We only visited the old town once, but the enormous crowds and the packed terraces with excessively loud music made it an unpleasant experience. We were relieved to leave the old town.
It feels as though Rethymno is overextending itself by trying to attract more tourists than it can actually handle. The city clearly can’t manage the influx, and the quality of the food in the city left us disappointed. For us, this is a farewell to Rethymno. It has lost its charm, and we will be looking for other, quieter places to enjoy.

A very nice old town. A lot of silver and gold. And classic souvenirs. The salespeople are nice and polite and will always give you a “special price”. They can often may your jewellery exactly to your preferences. Just ask.

With narrow cobbled streets, a plethora of tourist souvenir shops, tavernas, pubs and tavernas, it still looked good. I mean, I've seen Monastiraki in Athens, the old center of Chania, and the agitated capital vibe of Heraklion and I've been to other city centers, I mean I think I know a tourist trap when I see one. But these streets in particular seemed charming, with their oleander pots and ridiculously huge climbing vines of bougainvillea in full bloom (we don't know how to pronounce that so we ended up calling them bougie ville).
Being also a curfew in place (1 am) and no music allowed, the buzzing sounds of the streets, the white noise of different voices and countless languages felt somewhat poetic and it hit nice.
