- ANGELO VMilan, Italy4,689 contributionsMorosini fountainThe Morosini fountain, or Lion fountain, is in the main square of Heraklion. It was built during the Venetian rule of Crete, and it offered a solution to the problem of supplying Heraklion with water, providing 1,000 barrels of water a day. The fountain of the lions was the work of the Provveditore Generale (Superintendent) Francesco Morosini and the engineers Zorzi Corner, Raffaello Monnani and Francesco Basilicata. Thanks to Morosini, water from Archanes on Mt Juktas reached Heraklion along a 15-kilometre-long aqueduct. The work took 14 months to complete and the fountain was inaugurated on 25 April 1628.Visited October 2023Travelled soloWritten 25 October 2023
- nnmercmanCamberley, United Kingdom14,293 contributionsShuttered when we visitedThe fountain’s in a small square surrounded by cafes at an intersection at the top end of Ave 25 August. Unfortunately the fountain was not working and the area closed off when we visited. Somebody was on the inside taking photos and so maybe it needs restoration work? There was a notice pinned to the surround but it was only in GreekVisited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 October 2023
- Deanosaur89Edmonton, Canada8,617 contributionsNice Fountain on the 25th of August StreetThis is a touristy but charming area and the fountain is worth a quick stop. This was designed by Morozini back in 1629 and is in the middle of a historical square that has been a significant part of Crete for around a thousand years. The fountain was made originally by the Venetians to provide drinking water to the people of the city. There are many nice cafes, restaurants and shops in this area. It is about a 15 minute walk from the port area and there are quite a few other historical attractions nearby. The fountain is a quick stop if you're walking by but could be a long stop if you choose to sit at a nearby bench or grab a bite to eat.Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 25 March 2024

The fountain is in Eleftheriou Venizelou square and is surrounded by shops and restaurants. The fountain was made in 1629 during the Venetian era and is definitely worth a visit.Visited September 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 9 May 2024

It also acts as a good meeting place and landmark being in the main thoroughfare 25th August Street. This is a nice fountain and it provided a nice feature to the small square. The area around it is great with very nice cafe's to eat and have coffee with friends and family. This fountain has stood there for hundreds of years having being built by the Venetians and has survived wars and is still a beautiful monument.

This is one of the most beautiful fountain found in the centre of the old city of Iraklio. There is a history to this fountain - which makes it a must see. Good to view it during both day and night time where it nicely lit. Close to the Town Hall.

We passed the Morosini Fountain whilst walking around the city of Heraklion. We were on a one day stop in the city on a Sunday in June from our cruise ship and had been transferred into the city from the cruise terminal by coach.
The fountain sits almost at the centre of the city’s shopping and restaurant area and from here you can walk down August 25th street to the old harbour area, or chose from some nice restaurants if you would like a bite to eat. There is a shopping area here too.
The fountain is not large and has four lions supporting a small bowl spouting water into a larger bowl below. The fountain has been on this spot for some time having been originally built by the Venetians during their time occupying the city.

Heraklion is lot bigger than we could ever imagine, it's a big working, industrial city, mostly modern, not much of that typical Greek style streets. The area around Morosini fountain was something that reminded us that this is Greece, and a touristic place. It's lively, colorful and with a few historical places around the place, nice old strees with nice bars, tavernas. Those photos of the fountain are the rare ones we took that resemble a city that's different than any other, even the old town of Heraklion is not that "old" looking.

A fountain on Eleftheriou Venizelou Square. It dates back to the Venetian times (as some other structures in Heraklion). Four lions support the basin - it's a meeting point for many local people and the square is usually crowdy.

It is named after Francesco Morosini, Crete’s Italian governor at the time. The fountain was constructed to bring water from Archanes Village (Youchtas Mountain) to the thirsty Heraklion city. The fountain is decorated with lions which are a symbol of Venetian power and water gushes from their mouths. The top of the fountain has a marble Poseidon statue holding his triden. You can sit back in one of the restaurants and watch the locals pass by.

Honestly, I don't understand what's the big fuss about this fountain.
Yes, it's old, a vestige of the past, and pretty well-preserved, but it's nothing spectacular.
It's not worth going all the way there just to see the fountain. However, the whole area is full of bars and taverns where, for some 20-25 euros, you can have a decent meal (as long as you don't mind the hustle and bustle, because 25th Avgoustou Street is the main promenade for tourists and is very crowded even outside the season.)

How do I get there from the cruise ship terminal. Is it walkable?
Written 2 July 2017
Hello, the Morosini Fountain is a 20 min walk. I reckon. I am not sure where exactly the cruise ships moor. But once you get to the bottom of 25th August street, you are in a pleasant pedestrian area. You walk straight up and there you are.
