Nice beach if you're in Heraklion
Jul. 2021 • Couples
Heraklion was our base for 4 nights so logical choice for the first-day-beach was Ammoudara. Rent a car agent advised us to hit the first part of it, just after the Stadio, and so we listened, it was a good choice because on July 13th the beach was half empty, calm, no music, just the sound of light sea waves. There's a nice parking just behind the beach, we could see our car from the sunbeds, also a nice restaurant serving drinks on the beach, you order 2 drinks and get a free set of sunbeds (in July, we hear it's different in August). We were lucky because it was a calm day with no wind so the water was blue, sea was calm and water was perfect!
If you're around and it's not a windy day, it's a nice place to relax and still be close to Heraklion.

Terrible.

Don’t waste your time here. It is more likely to win the lottery than to find free parking spot or free umbrella.
There are just 2 coffees with very very limited capacity.
None of the staff is likely to engage with some coordination of the queue for the umbrellas so you may end up waiting the whole day. There are no tavernas.

Good but not the best

Clear water and plenty of space available but not the best beach of Crete. Water 💦 is transparent but not turquoise blue like other beaches.

Delightful sandy beach.

Sections are blue flag beaches. Regular lifeguard stations in what otherwise appears and felt like a safe beach to swim from. We certainly enjoyed the sea and extensive sand.

Lovely warm sea

Cycled here from Heraklion and stopped off at a number of the little beaches. It is not the prettiest of beaches but the water is fantastic. Luckily, there were ample wave action but watch for the undercurrent as this can be quite strong in places. Plenty of small cafes along the beach but be careful of some who are unsavoury. We stopped of at one. The name was in Greek writing but if you see large advertised corn on the cobs avoid at all costs. There are sun beds in the front of the cafe and it was the quietest of the lot. No surprise as the owner tried to charge us €6 for two cokes. Gave him €5 as I couldn’t be bothered to argue with him. He obviously picked up what we thought of him and he offered to give us the sun beds for free. We didn’t take him up on his offer as it was probably another con against tourists. I appreciate CoVid has been a strain on businesses but don’t start conning the tourists. So if you feel thirsty and come across this place right beside a car park and beside two large trees with wooden seats and concrete blue seats, avoid it like the plague. Now we know why the other places were busy.

Not the most scenic beach
Sep. 2019
Ammoudara Beach is not the most scenic of resting spots. I wouldn't recommend visiting if you prefer places of natural beauty. The large, blue loungers and umbrellas ruin the atmosphere. The sea seemed rather unpredictable, life guards were constantly pulling people out of the water, even in the shallowest parts. It was a bit stressful as opposed to being relaxing.

Nice beach about 10 minutes from Heraklion center
Oct. 2019
Went for a quick visit just to see water one more time before leaving for our flight. Easy parking and nice beach not crowded. Looked like locals visit and less tourists.

Great large spacious and private

Not over crowded like a lot of other beaches between Heriklion and Rythemno ... this beach is calm and has a local vibe. Even has a river delta that cuts through the beach making it a perfect shallow spot for kids or wind surfers to practice. Warm waters even in sept. Lots of sand. Quiet and peaceful. We loved it and could have spent the entire day there. Lots of local accommodation around so easy to stay put. Enjoy

Windy and high waves in September
Sep. 2019
The beach is nicely kept with lounge chairs and umbrellas available. As we went in early September, the north winds stirred up large waves that washed up to the first row of chairs, left debris on the shoreline and blew sand in your face. The lifeguard flag were always yellow or red and swimming was impossible or not recommended. Perhaps June through August would have been better. We rented a car and drove 1 hour south to Matala, where it was much nicer and with calmer waters.

Nice beach close to airport
Sep. 2019 • Couples
The beach is nice if you want to spend one day or few hours by the beach before taking your flight at Heraklion airport. We took the bus number 6 at the airport and were at the beach 30 to 40 minutes later (on the other way we took bus number 1). The cost of the ticket is 1.70e
Not the nicest beach in Crete but the beach is clean, not too busy and with all facilities (sun bed, restaurants with swimming pool). The water is clear and shallow. It was windy but still possible to enjoy the sea because there was no wave.
Good choice for few hours and if you do not have a car.
