Traveled to Aptera and it was well worth the drive. The site contains many remains from many periods primarily Roman but also a Turkish fort. The Roman cisterns are fantastic with one you can walk into and the theater, since being opened, is such a dream to site in. If you are in Chania I highly recommend making a trip... More

We spotted the sign and detoured on a whim. The site closes at 3pm but the staff were packing up for lunch at 1pm and let us in for free! The amphitheater is recently excavated and interesting - there is a video recreation in the fort too. The Roman cisterns were good as was a general wander of the site.... More

a beautiful fortress dominates the Souda bay and gives visitors the opportunity to see all Akrotiri.

Visited Aptera today using hire car. A bit off the beaten track but well worth it. Unfortunately raining quite hard a us without waterproofs (well your going to Crete you don't need waterproofs do you), still had a wander round. What an amazing place, the roman cisterns were quite something. The small church within the walls of the old monastery... More

Visited with friends on a hot sun hat October day. There is so much to see and plenty of educational information. Yet the site is not commercialised, you can wander around without the feeling of being watched by officials. We didn't see a lot of tourists. The half excavated amphitheatre is stunning. Entrance fee cheap.

Fantastic range of ruins to visit including a theatre and a three arch cistern. Very hot so need to take a hat and water. Interesting film in the monastery explaining the site. Usually 2 euro entrance but no one on the ticket booth today so even better value !

Near to Chania, easy to reach in a hire car. Good value for 2 euros a head! Some spectacular roman, in particular, structures associated with this ancient town. About an hour or so to explore.

This is a fascinating place to visit, and is sprawled out over quite some distance. It's worth pointing out that the entrance fee is a meagre €2, which is simply amazing value for what you get. When you find yourself in the small garden courtyard or the huge underground hall, your mind casts back to wonder what life must have... More

This ancient site near Chania overlooks Souda Bay. It closes at 3pm, so arrive early. Takes about 1 1/2 to 2 hours to walk around the grounds. Impressive Roman villa just starting excavation. Nearby is another overlook, a sort of fort. There is only one road in and up the hill, just off the main highway.

We' ve visted Ancient Aptera twice : on 2014 and 2016. Of course , you can find the remains and ruins of the town, only. However, everybody could imagine how big was the city in ancient time. The whole area is hudge. Unfortunately. the most of ancient stones were used to build much modern construction, like a big turkish fortress... More
