Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This 13th/14th Century Church is still in remarkable condition, considering its age! The interior & the religious frescoes are in poor condition but still well worth a visit. The water damage is bad in sections but some are very good and bright in colour & design. The site is very popular and can get crowded.

Were able to see just the exterior, since it was closed. Was told that the person responsible opens the place in very limited ours. So we went all the way from Chora Sfakion for nothing. It seems that the byzantine icons are filled with cement restauration !!!

We took the 07:00 bus from Agios Nikolaos, passed the church on our way to Kritsá and walked back to get there for the 08:00 opening. Really special interior!

You can get local bus for 2euro from Ag nik to Krista and it drops off outside the church, stay as long as you want, then a 15 min walk into village of Krista with all lace and craft shops is well worth the visit

This ancient church is set a little back from the main road about 1km east of the village of Kritsa. There is a bus stop nearby so it is easy to reach from Agios Nikolaios bus station. The exterior has been restored so is now rendered.

The church is under the care of the Greek Ministry of Tourism and Culture and entrance fee at the time of writing was €2.

The 13th and 14th century frescos are really interesting and well worth a visit if you are interested in art. It is very small so it does not take a great deal of time to visit.

Unfortunately the Greek authorities will not permit photography or imaging of any kind inside regardless of flash.

An English language leaflet describes the paintings and their history. A further English language book on local Greek churches is published by the Parish of the Holy Trinity Agios Nikolaos and can be purchased from the Ag Nik cathedral for €5. This contains black and white photos of this church and colour pictures of other local frescos.

A worthwhile experience, the church has wonderfully preserved fresco scenes of the life of Christ.
Our unplanned visit was enjoyable, would recommend to anyone who has an interest in art, history, or churches.

This lovely little church, a short drive drive from Agios Nikolaos, contains remarkably preserved wall frescos depicting the life of Christ. Look out for the church benefactors, painted on the far left wall also the curious children's heads in the laps of the saints in heaven.

We were able to look through this church as part of our tour group.
There is a small entrance fee but the frescos are well worth it.

The church is just off the main road before you reach Kritsa, opposite the Paradise Taverna. If coming by bus from Agios Nikolaos, there is a stop outside. It's easier to visit Kritsa first and then walk back to the church as it's downhill from there - just be aware that the church closes at 3pm and isn't open on Mondays. There's a small entry fee of 2 euros which is well worth it to see some spectacular frescoes. The ones on the dome and the central nave depict the Presentation, the Baptism, the Raising of Lazarus and the Entry into Jerusalem. The central aisle is dedicated to the Virgin Mary and the Assumption. This area is the oldest, believed to date from the 13th century, the rest of the church from the early to mid 14th century. The south aisle has the best preserved ones depicting the life of the Virgin Mary and is dedicated to St Anne. The north aisle is dedicated to St Anthony with frescoes of the Second Coming and Judgement Day.

In remarkably good condition seeing as it is some 700 years old. The frescoes are very clear with quite different faces for the many characters represented. Given the turbulent history of Crete it is a wonder that hey were not defaced, yet alone destroyed.
