- RajamoraLos Angeles, California129 contributionsA Heady Delphic ExperienceWhat can you say that can truly capture the profound experience of making the same seemingly endless and tortuous trek across an expanse of mountainous Greek countryside that thousands of hopeful feet of both the low and the mighty had trod over millennia in quest of their fate as mouthed in oracular gibberish by an illiterate village woman high on the hallucinatory fumes exuded by the porous rock forming her mountain niche shrine. The long, dusty zigzag path up to the Oracle’s ruined Temple of Apollo is marked by other equally fascinating ancient ruins all the way up to the sacred mountain top. The sight and the experience is inexpressibly moving. If you can make this ancient pilgrimage, do it.Visited November 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 October 2023

When I was about 500–600 metres from the temple, I started to feel the energies in my whole body, coming down from the top of my head to my spine. It was like being in deep meditation! Unbelievable!Visited October 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 11 June 2024

This is one of the most important buildings in the Archaeological Park. Most of the temple has been carried away over the years, but you can still get an impression of what it once looked like. We visited with a guide who had recreations which greatly added to our experience.
One of the parts that does remain is the section of floor on which the Oracle sat on a three-legged stool, inhaling the fumes which lead to the prophesies.

Spent a few hours at the temple and the museum. We had a local guide which the experience even better (highly recommended). We did the museum first which helps with the the understanding before you walk the temple area. Great historical pieces and could easily spend 1-2 hours before walking the site. Once outside be prepared for some walking but there are several spots where you can take breaks on your way up to the top of the temple area. Definitely, bring your camera and your walking shoes and be prepared to spend 2-3 hours minimum. Definitely worth the visit.

A glorious sunny morning and no crowds were ideal to appreciate the site and Temple. Wending our way along the Sacred Way we saw the glorious six Doric columns of the Temple.
These were re-established by the French excavators to give a semblance of the original grandeur of the holy place.
Peace and tranquillity were perfect for contemplating the power and influence of the Sanctuary in antiquity. At the centre of the Temple the Pythian Priestess chanted her prophecies, often with ambiguous pronouncements.

We visited here recently. The site is located in the Parnassos mountains. The setting is spectacular, overlooking a valley. There are several sites plus museum. We spent so long at the primary site we didn't make it to the museum. The site is located on a hill so be prepared to go uphill and down. The ruins are huge, one gets a sense of scale beside them. Next time we plan to stay nearby overnight and spend two days. Highly recommend.

Went on a day tour with Key Tours. Had a fantastic experience with our wonderful and lovely guide, Marianna Tsigaridoo. She was amazing and it was truly a knowledgable and enlightening trip for us. Hope to be on the next tour with her.

1. Photos: 1 & 21-22 --> Temple of Poseidon in Cape Sounion, Attica (Cape of Athens) about 70 Km drive from Athens town centre
2. Photos: 2 --> Not too sure which Temple that is..
3. Photos: 3 --> Odeon of Herodes Atticus (ancient theatre) on the foot of the Acropolis of Athens. Fantastic performances still take place here during the Athens festival season
4. Photos: 4-21 --> That is indeed the Sanctuary of Apollo but it is located in Delphi about 200 Km drive north, north west of Athens..
All of the above sites are most definitely worth visiting but would suggest that tripadvisor does something about this particular page as it only leads to major confusion. Hope this helps people

Walk past the treasuries where the ancients bought gifts for the gods as you come to the ruins of the Temple of Apollo. Keep climbing up to the theater to the top of the mountain and the stadium. Make sure you frequently turn around as you climb the mountain as it puts the entire site into prospective. The beauty is breathtaking. Look for the adeqduct in the valley below that takes water to Athens. Everywhere you look on this mountain of ruins you will find something worhtwhile to explore. After you come down make sure you drink from the sacred spring and have all your wishes granted. We went with a one day chat tour from Athens. Our guide made the trip live as she gave examples of how the oracles answered so that they never would be wrong. A word of caution-- you will be walking up hill so it probably is not for someone with heart problems or someone that has difficuly walking.

Have always wanted to visit the Apollo Temple at Delphi. What's the easiest way to get there? Would it be a tour? Seems like the Greek Bus System might be a little too complicated...
Thank you!
Written 31 March 2015
Very easy to get their, just follow the road signs. They will be in Greek and English, so you will have not problems at all. You will see signs to Itea and Nafpaktos, follow those signs if you do not see Delphi. These two towns are on the way to Delphi. Delphi is about 30 minutes before Delphi. Parking in Delphi is not easy at all, only two main streets. The taverna Dion has excellent food. On the first main street, the taverna is located on the left, up the street a little ways. It is a must.
