It was rather frustrating, we were not able to take in this sight due to the number of tour groups barging around the Acropolis. Their guides show no concern towards others, stopping and blocking whenever they please, not moving aside, not allowing others through etc. Bear in mind the one way system on the stairs and that they are not the widest - there was plenty of space beyond this point if they wanted to gather and address their groups!
This spoilt our experience of what is an impressive structure.

The Propylaea is the impressive entrance of the Acropolis! Even this entrance is so impressive! Be sure to take some minutes to admire it before you get into Acropolis!!

You need athletic shoes if you are going through this grand entrance because you are going to walk on some slick rocks. This was one of several public works commissioned by the Athenian leader Pericles in order to rebuild the Acropolis at the conclusion of the Persian Wars. Construction began in 437 BC and was terminated in 432 when the building was still unfinished. It cost us a total of 40 Euros for 2 adults and 2 teenagers. Buy water long before you get dropped off by a taxi or a bus. We had been in Greece for a few days before we came here and we were used to paying 0.5 Euros for a small bottle of water but here we paid 2 Euros.

The Propylaea was the main gate to the Acropolis, and even what remains today is impressive and inspiring.

In Greek architecture, the porch or the entrance to an important site is called a Propylaea.
The Propylaea to the Acropolis is a great architectural example of this imposing Greek gate that leads you the monuments.
The structure is light in color and imposing in size. We have to wonder how did built such a remarkable gate at the time that cars did not exist. The marble, the balanced, fix and very tall columns sitting just the edge of the hill. You will be impressed and realize its amplitude as you get closer. It is not easy to just stop and look in this section you kind a need to move with the crowd.
On your way up if you can look on your right to see the Temple of Athena Nike.
While on Acropolis site you can see the Theater of Dionysus, Odeon of Herodes Atticus Theater and on the Acropolis Hill, on site surrounding the Parthenon you can see the Temple of Athena Nike and the Erechtheion.

The main and spectacular entrance to The Aropolis. Also the spot where most tourists seem to congregate for selfies and other photos, which causes the guards to frantically blow their whistles and yell. The marble and limestone steps are very slippery.
Still, it is an impressive monument and a fitting entrance to this iconic sacred rock. Don't forget to look back over the city and the nearby Pnyx.

When I reached the entrance of the summit temples, I was totally gobsmacked by the grand and the scale of Propylaea. This breathtaking architecture, together with the massive columns/ pillars, marble staircases and the grand exterior design were unbelievable. I had previously seen it in pictures but no picture can do justice for this Acropolis entrance gate. I can't imagine how grand and amazing it would look like if they didn't have the Peloponnesian War and to allow the construction of this monumental gateway to finish.
Propylaea is very picturesque. We were like everyone else sitting on the white marble staircases in front of the gate and to admire this unbelievable grand design. I cannot believe how intelligent and talent the architect (Phidias) was and please don't forget that he designed this in more than 2,454 years ago. In my opinion, it is the most beautiful architecture in the whole Acropolis/ Athens, even it is not as famous as the Parthenon or the Erechtheion.
This is a MUST SEE in Athens! Absolutely 100% recommended!
Tips: (It is easy to climb up the Propylaea but it can get overcrowded in you visit during the peak hours (i.e. afternoon). Try to get there early in the morning (i.e. 8:30 - 9:30 am) to avoid the crowd)

This is the first building that you see as you reach the top of the steps. It can get very busy with everyone trying to get through to the Parthenon, but if you take some time, you can appreciate the architecture of the elegant columns that remain and the history of the many thousands of people who have entered the Acropolis the same way before you.

I enjoyed the view of the city. I was taken aback but the steepness of the large slippery stones and of the massive crowds climbing, descending and lingering (see my many βhelpfulβ π photos π·).

Propylaea is the impressive entrance to the Acropolis. You may overlook its beauty if you are anxious to get to the top and see the Parthenon. But take your time and appreciate its design as you enter.
