This was fun to explore on a pleasant Sunday off-season. Lots of families enjoying the day. Many happy people in cafes. Some interesting shops, and of course, many places all selling the same souvenirs.

We visited this area the first time on a Sunday and the Plaka and Monastriki were packed elbow to elbow by midday. It was still a great time for shoppers!!!

Where to go in the evenings in Athens. Really if you want to have a good dinner and enjoy a live nightlife, Plaza is where to be!

It is the oldest district in Athens with outstanding scenery. The moment you start walking on its paved narrow lanes you get the feeling that you travel back in time. You will be mesmerized by the beauty of the houses with neoclassic colors, the architecture, the well preserved gardens, the elegance and the atmosphere of the whole area. Even Plaka's... More

so many shops and places to eat. It can be annoying as all the restaurants want your custom but the food is amazing where ever you choose to go. plenty of shops but they all seem to sell the same things, can all be a bit tacky, just depends on what you want to buy

Great place to wander and grab a bite to eat and people watch or visit the local shops. We were around for Greek Independence Day so it was quite busy.

I enjoy Plaka quite a bit. More so during the week when it's less crowded. Lots of little shops and cafes. There are new treasures to be found every time you go. It's really the heart of Athens.

This is a sparkling place to visit with lots of open air restaurants near the Acropolis Museum, Metro stop. I would advise wandering up one of the hills to the square.

Give yourself a couple of hours to slowly walk through the winding streets of the Plaka District to browse the various merchants, haggle for best prices, stop to have a lunch and wine and soak in the spirit of Athens.

Staying in Plaka

Neighbourhood Profile
Plaka
Due to its proximity to the Acropolis, Plaka remains the area where the majority of foreign visitors stay and play. Its attractive features include small squares, some notable museums and the beautiful Mitropolis cathedral, as well as a host of places to stay, eat and drink. Its pedestrian zones make it a pleasant place to escape from the city’s notorious traffic. Adrianou and Kidathineon Streets contain a number of souvenir shops, offering classier items than you will find in the Flea Market. The most rewarding section to explore is the upper reaches towards the Acropolis itself, where many old stone houses with tiled roofs have survived. Up here you can find leafier corners and the odd quaint taverna with unobstructed views of the ancient rock.
