The stadium was the foot racecourse. Races were started at the straignt end. The Athens stadium was commenced in 331 B.C. and reconstructed in 160 A.D. by Herodes Atticus. The stadium was destroyed by over-conservation between 1896 A.D and 1906 A.D.

We spent an hour here and really enjoyed the visit. We benefitted from the free audio guides and wondered around the stadium, ran round the track and snuffled around the gift shop almost buying expernisve Olympic poster artwork...part of the pleasure is that there were...More
I couldn't resist the chance to run around the 185 metre track. The marble seating still looks amazing. There is also a portacabin which sells souvenirs. An audio guide is provided as part of the 5 euros entrance charge.
