Top ways to experience Kotzia Square
The area
Neighbourhood: Omonia
Omonia Square is as plain in appearance as Syntagma is grand. Surrounded largely by functional blocks from the 1950s and 60s and no longer boasting its underground stalls, the square is now mostly frequented by immigrants and bargain shoppers. The most rewarding area to explore is to the south. Set off down Athinas Street, with the Acropolis gradually coming into focus in the distance, and you will get a sense of old commercial Athens, especially at the picturesque meat, fish and vegetable markets some way beyond the City Hall. The blocks to the west of Athinas are home to many Chinese and South Asian traders, adding a multicultural atmosphere to what was until the late 1990s a very homogenous society.
How to get there
- Omonoia • 4 min walk
- Panepistimio • 7 min walk

The Kotzia Square is located in front of Athens City Hall.
The square, with it's typical 19th century neo-classical architecture is furthermore surrounded by the Municipal Theater of Athens, the National Bank, and the Main Post Office.
Hard to be missed, but definitely a must see in Athens.

The title pretty much sums it up. This square was right across from our hotel. While we were visiting, there was an active book tent sale going on. The square is not particularly pretty but it contains Classical ruins and it is also adjacent to some interesting locations: the City hall, the Varvakios central market (farmers', fish, meat), and some neoclassical buildings.

It is a dangerous place, filled with beggars and junkies. Although it is good looking it is filthy. If you are not from Athens, stay away, especially after dark!

Kotzia Square is a one of the oldest squares of the modern Athens. It is crossed by two important commercial streets. The pedestrianized Aiolou street with its affordable clothing shops and the Aiolou street with its hardware stores and the central market.
Ι walk frequently on the Aiolou street and subsequently to the Kotzia square. Around the square there are three important historical building. On Aiolou street The building of the headquarters of the national bank of Greece and the Mela Mansion ex central post office. On Athinas street the city hall of Athens.
In the middle there is an impressive fountain. Below the square there is an underground car parking. Very convent for those who have rented a car.
The area around is not very safe during nights when the shop are closed. The presence of the security around the central national bank of Greece helps a little.
The square is the center for exhibitions, concerts, demonstrations etc. Nearly every time I pass there is a happening.
There are some coffee shops at the north side of the square. I avoid them because there not touristic neither their quality of coffee is as good as I like.

Kotzia Square (Greek: Πλατεία Κοτζιά) is a square in central Athens, Greece. The square retains several characteristics of 19th-century local neoclassical architecture, such as the City Hall of the Municipality of Athens and the National Bank of Greece Cultural Center. It is named after Konstantinos Kotzias, former Mayor of Athens.

Many people just chilling. It seemed a little touristy. I personally did not see the excitement to hang out here. It was clean though.

Large square where we fed the pigeons and sat by the fountain for a rest, watch what way the wind is blowing or you will get wet from the spray

Kotzia Square is located atop important archaeological findings, part of which have been revealed and are visible to the visitor. In the perimeter of the square one can see a line of interesting commercial, business, such as the old but also the new HQs of the National Bank of Greece, and public buildings including the Town Hall of the City of Athens.

Kotzia Square is a square is located in central Athens.
The square has several similar characteristics of 19th century Neo-classical architecture, such as the nearby National Library, the National Bank of Greece and the Academy of Athens.
It is also only a minutes’ walk away from the meat and vegetable market of Monastiraki.
