Marvellous fortified town close to the Spanish border
Jul. 2020
The atmospheric old citadel sits high above the attractive Rio Minho. Most of it dates back to the 17th century with the very extensive battlements being quite similar to those at Elvas. There are two separate forts with a bridge between them. The best thing to do is just to spend an hour walking around the outer walls. The northern fort is the more attractive and atmospheric and it contains most of the towel and linen shops catering for the Spanish invasion to buy these products. The best advice is to avoid weekends and during the main part of the day in July and August. The new town is unattractive and not worth seeing. I could not give this marvellous place more than a 4 out of 5 because too many cars are allowed into the citadel and you frequently have to get out of the way for them. You can descend through the enormous gates at the northern end by the pousada to the combined rail and road bridge that crosses to Spain. There is a pedestrian walkway on both sides of the bridge.

A beautiful village within a fort
Feb. 2020
The fort itself is impressive, overlooking the Mino River, and the village built inside is lovely. It is a linen center for Spanish visitors, too.

Sightseeing in Valença.
Nov. 2019
The historical centre of “Valeça” is formed by the “Fortress” who is a unique and military complex built on a lovely location with great walls and monuments and watchtowers.
Valença is a reference for good shopping in the Iberian Peninsula. Not to forget is that
in Valencia you can taste the magnificent codfish, a delicacy that is king here in more than 60 restaurants. The tradition and knowledge of how to treat this product makes Portugal, but especially Valencia, the capital of cod in the Iberian Peninsula

Impressive Views with Centuries of History
Dec. 2019
The views from the fortress are amazing. The river Miño, Spain on the far banks and the quiet streets with shops make this a pleasant experience. There are shops, cafes, restaurants and walking paths to enjoy. The condition of the fortress is well kept and the people were very friendly.

My starting point on the Camino Portugués
Apr. 2019 • Solo
This Fort is a sprawling structure that offers wonderful vistas of the landscape. There are restaurants and shops on the grounds to make exploring a lovely way to spend an hour or two prior to making my way towards Spain.

This place is amazing, because when you start to walk in there, you realize that the city has made a regular street inside the Fort walls.

Peaceful fort
Sep. 2019
Valenca is an exquisite city-in-a-fort. Walk the entire perimeter for spectacular views of the Minho River and Tui, Spain on the other side. You can walk right up to the old guard turrets and go inside. The Camino trail passes through tunnels at the northeast edge. Beautiful views!
