Despite the actual story told here is somewhat boring and introspective the building and the way the exhibition has been arranged makes a pleasant sight even for those of us with limited appreciation for religious objects and paintings

the museum and its next door Church of Mercy stand as a tribute to the generosity over the centuries of the wealthy merchants of Porto toward the mentally ill and physically disabled poor of the city. Religious icons and portraits of the major benefactors of the Misericordia health care facilities fill the museum, while the facilities of the small church next to the museum reflect the baroque artistry of many of the Roman Catholic houses of worship concentrated within the old city.

This is an interesting museum but a little overpriced for what you get. It has some interesting displays about the history of Porto.

The visit begins on the third floor of the renovated museum, which includes an impressive collection of portraits and religious art from the 15th-17th centuries. The most important work in the museum is a huge Flemish Renaissance painting called 'The spring of life' (Fons Vitas), which depicts Don Manuel 1 and his family, who look at the blood from the body of Jesus Christ. From the third floor you descend through the various displays to the Church of Misericordia, considered one of the most beautiful in Porto. Don't miss the blue and white hand-painted azulejo.
