A Must See Synagogue
Dec. 2019
We arrived in the midst of a deluge and the synagogue was closed. As we lingered outside, the docent -- an Israeli -- appeared and offered to take us across the street to the museum and walked us through the exhibits. The history of this synagogue -- funded by Iraqi (?) Jews, and if I recall correctly, completed on the eve of the Holocaust - was an eye opener. He then offered to bring us to the synagogue, as the workmen had left for the day. This synagogue is truly magnificent and a must see.

Warm and Welcoming

We thoroughly enjoyed attending the Shabbat services on a Friday night at this synagogue .Although we did not speak the language , we felt very welcomed and they even invited us to stay for dinner in the sukkah.

Worth the visit if you are in Porto andif you are of Jewish heritage
Sep. 2019
Beautiful synagogue with a long history, mostly if you are Jewish and interested in learning about the congregation - otherwise may not be worth the trouble as it is highly secured and you need to make an appointment and be very clear about when you are coming etc. they give no indication where you are supposed to go, park etc. You may have to wait a few minutes to get in, but someone will come to the gate. Our tour guide was good, but it is a bit awkward in the beginning - also, be prepared to be solicited for a donation to the synagogue.

Friday night Shabbat Service
Sep. 2019 • Friends
This is just about the most unfriendly Shul I've ever been to. Nobody from the congregation spoke to us! Service is Sephardi Orthodox - women in the look
admire gallery.

Shul building interior & exterior is magnificent.

I just wouldn't bother with a service.

Such an important piece of heritage
Sep. 2019
Went on tour of the synagogue led by Elan. The inside is beautiful...and the history of how it was built and the jewish community then and now was informative and interesting. A museum will be opening soon...too bad we missed it but once opened you will only be able to visit the synagogue if you go to pray there. I am sure the museum will be fantastic.

Dont bother
Aug. 2019 • Couples
We went out of our way to get to the location of the biggest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula......we emailed our interest to do so the day before since their website requested that visitors do so. Although we didn’t get a response, we were on our last day in Porto and decided to make our way there. The locked gates, barbed wire and the quiet surroundings did not look very inviting and it turns out that it wouldn’t be open until 2:30. So we found a place to have some lunch and returned at 2:45 where we were totally dismissed by a security guard who had ZERO interest in accommodating foreigners for a quick visit. He whisked is away as though we were stray cats......a real a hole. VERY UNIMPRESSED
Don’t waste your time

Cannot enter without prior permission

It‘s quite far away from other things and the building is surrounded by barbed wire, with an unfriendly security guard at the front to top it off. The building is OK but definitely would not recommend unless you have a special interest in it.

Our visit to Synagogue of Porto
Jul. 2019 • Couples
The very first thing that we did upon arriving to Porto at 15:20 by bus from Lisbon was to take taxi directly to the synagogue. This was on Friday and we knew that visits are only possible before 17:00. Even though we sent e-mails in advance to get a permission for the visit, it took some time before the guard let us in; actually, this happened only when we mentioned we are from Israel. May be this was due to preparations for the Saturday service.
Anyway, inside we got a very warm welcome from Ilan, an Israeli guy who now lives in Porto. He told us about the story of the synagogue, about the story of Jews in Portugal, and about the small Jewish community of Porto nowadays. We could feel that he is very happy and proud about his activity in the community.
The building is beautiful, and we could take pictures; attaching here some of them. When we were leaving, Ilan gave us a small present – a box of candles for Shabbat. Thank you, Ilan

Visit to Synagogue
May 2019 • Couples
We were greeted by Ilan, an Israeli relocated in Porto. He was a wealth of knowledge and so very proud of his synagogue and the Jewish population of Porto. We were happy to hear that the Jews here feel no antisemitism and practice openly.
The Synagogues is a magnificent structure. It is beautifully tiled. If in Porto, add Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue to your must see list.
