Casa da Musica was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music. The project took shape in 1999 after the Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture won the international architectural competition. Work began in 1999 on the site of Porto's former central tram garage on the Rotunda da Boavista, and Casa da Musica opened its doors to the public on April 15th , 2005. Casa da Musica was planned as a home for all types of music and it is not only part of the urban redevelopment of Porto but also part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world. Underlying it is an innovative and wide-ranging cultural project, which aims to make an exciting contribution to the national and international music scene, as an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Besides concerts, recitals and other types of performance, Casa da Musica also organises events for musicians and musicologists and invests in research into the origins of Portuguese music. In addition, it plays a very important role in music education. It is a cultural meeting point between music and other areas of artistic creation and knowledge, providing a space for all kinds of audiences and creators.

I would not go there just to see this place. It's a special building, yes but I would have had enough just looking at the pictures. Once inside, most of the areas were closed to the public (we visited on a Sunday). I think there are nicer places to go to when in Porto. It's better to spend the day... More

I love modern buildings and making pictures from them. This is an ideal spot to make some interesting photos.

Not crazy about the architecture of the building but great space for concerts. Cafe/restaurant with free wifi so you can grab a cup of coffee and catch up on e-mails. Food was cheap, not brilliant but ok. Coffee as usual in Portugal was fantastic.

We went for a pop concert on a saturday night and the bars were closed. The restaurant was half empty and there was not much of a vibe. Building is interesting but not so exciting. The concert and acoustics were good though.

The house is a fantastic architectural building that combines both arts, architecture and music. To assist a concert in this place is a fantastic experience. Fantastic sound quality and the programs are very well choosen. Not to loose.

Travelled as a young architect couple. Totally worth paying a visit AND A TOUR (there's discount for (architecture) students), there's also a great cafe on the 1st floor and on the rooftop. For some reason, there was no other people who wanted guide that day so we had him all for ourselves and he really explained it well. If you... More

Casa da Música was designed by Rem Koolhaas, and was built as part of Porto's project for European Culture Capital in 2001 but was only finished in the first half of 2005 and immediately became an icon in the city. Although construction ran four years over schedule and cost roughly €100M, the building process brought new engineering challenges to create... More

Even though the building looks ugly outside with all the concrete, there are some interesting architectural ideas behind the building. Take a guided tour to get to know the details with the different rooms.
