About
Casa da Musica was conceived to mark 2001, the year in which Porto was Cultural Capital of Europe, and it is the first new building in Portugal to be entirely dedicated to music - to the presentation and public enjoyment of music, to music education and to the creation of music. The project took shape in 1999 after the Rem Koolhaas & Ellen van Loon - Office for Metropolitan Architecture won the international architectural competition. Work began in 1999 on the site of Porto's former central tram garage on the Rotunda da Boavista, and Casa da Musica opened its doors to the public on April 15th , 2005. Casa da Musica was planned as a home for all types of music and it is not only part of the urban redevelopment of Porto but also part of a network of cultural facilities, for the city of Porto and for the wider world. Underlying it is an innovative and wide-ranging cultural project, which aims to make an exciting contribution to the national and international music scene, as an arena for all types of musical events - from classical music to jazz, from fado to electronic music, from great international productions to more experimental projects. Besides concerts, recitals and other types of performance, Casa da Musica also organises events for musicians and musicologists and invests in research into the origins of Portuguese music. In addition, it plays a very important role in music education. It is a cultural meeting point between music and other areas of artistic creation and knowledge, providing a space for all kinds of audiences and creators.

A concert here was quite an experience. I booked late, so was able to get seats away from other concert goers, although mask wearing was obligatory. The music was sublime, and the architecture of the building interesting! My only disppointment was that I could not eat in the restaurant before the concert, because the restaurant was closed on 19 March 2022.

We joined a Portuguese language tour since our guide Jorge was allowed to translate in English. I've never seen a music hall on this scale. I've visited opera houses which are basically two parts -- a stage and an audience section. This one is truly avant-garde with multiple practice rooms, a room just for children, and a magnificent stage.
It is a wonder for music performance buffs, but it is of limited interest for those into just music appreciation.

Possibly the best evening we had in Porto - and there was stiff competition. Outstanding, spacious venue with beautiful acoustics hosted some tremendously moving baroque music and the tenor moved my 10yr old son to tears. A lovely gentleman nipped behind the counter to procure a badge for my son after the shop had shut - above and beyond. Ridiculously well priced tickets. Can’t recommend enough.

Guided tour promoted by SNQTB do Norte. We had the privilege of being accompanied by Mr. Paulo Ferreira, a person who loves music, lives Casa da Música and all artistic expression. His explanations for each room, for each space are an authentic “symphony” for those who listen to him. NOTE: It's a shame the restaurant on the 7th floor is closed. An excellent space, with an extraordinary panoramic view that is, in my opinion, underutilized. Thank you sir. Paulo Ferreira for the sensitivity he demonstrates in his words.

Violin band visit and concert 🎻. Listening to around 100 musicians in one of the best rooms in the world is a unique experience. The room was thought out down to the smallest detail, including the acoustic level. It is a symbol of Porto due to its architecture 🏛️. A big project. This great work is to be praised.

What a wonderful place! I highly recommend visiting!
Designed by a Dutch architect, Casa da Música has an auditorium for 1300 people in addition to other smaller music rooms. It also has a wonderful educational space for children. The tip is to take a guided tour to discover this unique space! We were lucky enough to meet Mr. Paulo, who showed us the space with all its peculiarities. We simply love it!! I highly recommend taking the guided tour.

Fantastic architecture and cutting-edge technology in optimizing and qualifying sound in various concert and social spaces. Special thanks to Casa da Música Guide Isabel who accompanied us, conveying everything about the project and with great affection, hospitality, joy and friendliness, she led the entire visit. It was really worth it. I really liked!!!

Guided tour in Portuguese, very interesting at an acceptable cost. All spaces are different. Each room is unique and at the same time versatile I loved the VIP room lined with tiles. Unfortunately we were unable to visit the concert room because it was going on an essay with the philharmonic, however by what we were able to visualize, it would be the cherry on the top of the cake.

This music hall is a must-visit in Porto, especially if you're into music or architecture. There are two ways to explore Casa da Música: take a guided tour for behind-the-scenes access or attend a concert. I did both and loved it! The fado concert was incredible, and the guided tour was equally fascinating. Our guide was knowledgeable, friendly, and accommodating. The tour provides insights into the building's design and concept, with opportunities for photographs and even witnessing technical teams at work. Everyone, from the ticketing team to the gift shop staff, was friendly. It's a refreshing change from crowded tourist spots, and you can end your day with dinner and wine at Mercado Bom Sucesso nearby. Highly recommended!

To broaden our exposure to Portuguese music beyond Fado, we went to a concert of three Classical-to-Modern orchestral pieces played by the Orchestra of the Atlantic Coast. The music was pleasant but hard to see anything distinctively Portuguese in it. The Casa Da Musica, though, is wonderful. I especially loved the windows in the hall and the way the seats slide back to make room for people arriving in your row and moving past your seat. In the midst of a thoroughly modern hall, they have an organ in the 16th or 17th century style....quite incongruous.

Hi, do I need to purchase ticket just to see around inside the building area?
Written 27 September 2016
Yes. You need to purchase a ticket for the excellent guided tour. Without a ticket you can't get past the lobby.
Written 4 October 2016
Can you buy a ticket at the door on the day of your concert?
Written 21 September 2016
As with anywhere, it depends on availability. We booked online to make sure we weren't disappointed. It was easy to do and we picked up the tickets on arrival.
