The Portuguese Centre for Photography (CPF) is a free public service based in Porto, in the building of the former Relação Prison. It was created in 1997 by the then Ministry of Culture and it is currently under the supervision of the Directorate-General for Books, Archives and Libraries. Its competences are aimed at promoting and valuing our photographic heritage, namely through the archival processing of specimens and the management of the National Photography Collection. The CPF also offers an annual programme of temporary exhibitions, a permanent Museum Centre that comprises a rare and valuable collection of photographic cameras, a specialized library - which provides specimen research and reproduction services -, a shop, and free guided tours to the building and the exhibitions upon prior reservation

We caught an exhibit of Frida Kahlo which made this even more interesting (you had to pay for that portion). The building is great. Fantastic collection of cameras. To top it off, we enjoyed a snack at one of the many nearby cafes. It's near...More

I was looking forward to a building full of photographic material but this was limited to three rooms There was an exhibition of cameras, on the top floor, including an interesting group of spy cameras and novelty cameras. This exhibition is really about the building...More

The Centro Portugues de Fotografia building is interesting as it was once a prison. The barred windows and thick walls are impressive. The exhibitions change, and the one we saw was simple, but the entrance is free so it is worth going for a few...More

What a let down! I was so eager to visit this Museum as a keen photographer. The building is interesting as an old prison. The bared windows and thick walls are impressive. The exhibition itself was most disappointing. Entrance is free. The photographs on display...More

The Portuguese Centre of Photography hosts several very interesting photography exhibitions of mostly portuguese artists. The building of the centre is very nice and used to be a prison. Don't miss the upper floor, where there is a big collection of cameras.

It is the worst museum I have even been to in my life. I am a photographer myself and usually very open to any sorts of art but this has just been a waste of time. With a building like that and so many talented...More

It’s free, they have bathrooms, the photos are ok, but the 3rd floor with all the old cameras is where it’s at! Super cool to see. Worth it!

This photography museum is set in an old prison. Free to enter, we found the exhibition to be of mixed interest and would have liked more about the history of the building.

I can't believe this museum is free! The featured works are so-so, a few of the artists are spectacular but there's some amateur work as well. What was really enthralling was the upstairs exhibit of cameras all the way from the mid-19th century to now....More
