- Giorgia GobbatoNovara, Italy761 contributionsVery niceThe most famous street in Porto, along the Douro River. It is full of clubs, small artisans and singer-songwriters. Nice atmosphere. Furthermore, it is possible to see various attractions even from afar. La via più famosa di Porto, lungo il fiume Douro. È pieno di locali, di piccoli artigiani e cantiautori. Bella atmosfera. In più è possibile vedere diverse attrazioni anche se da lontano.Visited November 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 30 November 2023
- hans-jaguarSanta Comba Dao, Portugal24,385 contributionsVisiting Porto. From here you had access to the infamous Ponte das Barcas, where in the year 1809 more than 4 thousand people died during an attack by French troops. Today, a bronze bas-relief attests to this moment. At the Pier it is possible to observe the existence of a door called Postigo do Carvão. Of the 18 doors or shutters in the Fernandina Wall built in the 14th century, this is the only one that has remained to this day. This riverside is surrounded by cafes and shops make this one of the main tourist areas in the city. Nice to stroll when you have shiny weather, but even on a rainy day there are allot of people walking arround.Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 20 December 2023
- KomatorBarcelona, Spain902 contributionsVery alive areaCais de Ribeira is the area of Porto located by the river. It's a touristy place, but it's worth taking a stroll. It's full of bars and restaurants, as well as people performing street acts. The views of the river or the Luís I Bridge are spectacular.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 January 2024

Lovely riverside bars.Wandered down here for a couple of afternoons, great atmosphere, bars, restaurants, buskers, cafes, shops, boat rides along the river, it's all going on here. Sat for coffee and beer in a couple of the bars, prices are cheap and service was good. Great views over the river.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 7 March 2024
- Ann HYork, United Kingdom2,576 contributionsWell worth a visitThis boardwalk alongside the Douro river was a very short walk from where we were staying and we visited every day of our short stay. Lined with cafes, bars and restaurants, there is lots of space for a sit down and a relax while watching the life of Porto. Buskers make the experience more enjoyable too!Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 26 March 2024
- SurvivoryLuxembourg City, Luxembourg1,112 contributionsTop notch for watching the cityAbsolutely a place you should not miss if you are visiting Porto. Full of tourist traps, well yes, but that you can choose to avoid. Have a seat at a cafe, get a glass of wine and enjoy the show. Loads of people walking along the river and plenty of boats passing by. You will have a lot to watch - and the view of the city is stunning.Visited May 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 5 May 2024
- jaybeeFLPalm Harbor, Florida3,445 contributionsVibrant and PhotogenicSpent 5 days in Porto recently and the Ribeira was clearly one of the highlights. Despite being "off season" the place was mobbed with tourists despite the cold, damp and off and on rain. There are countless restaurants, bars, shops, street vendors as well as musicians to keep your attention but the riverside location, colorful buildings and non stop boat traffic is also a big draw! No trip to Porto is complete without a few hours on the Ribeira!Visited April 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 13 May 2024
- JelenaNovi Sad, Serbia19 contributionsPorto at its finestOne of the most photographed and popular places in Porto. I feel at home when there, sitting on the dock and just watching people go by, listening to street musicians or simply gazing at the river. Let yourself explore the narrow streets of Ribeira, enjoy the view of the Dom Luis bridge, and immerse your senses in the mixture of languages and faces. Eat your nata there, but watch out for the seagulls :)Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 5 July 2024

We enjoyed the evening walk at the river front of Douro River (Porto side). Great architecture, colourful cascading houses, lively street music, rows of restaurants and cafes. Enjoy the view of the famous Dom Luis I bridge (project authored by Gustave Eiffel), a double-decked metal bridge.
To appreciate it even more, I suggest crossing the Dom Luis I bridge and viewing Porto from the other side, Vila Nova de Gaia Gaia (try this both in the evening and afternoon. View Porto kissed by the sun.
If you wish to cross the upper deck of Dom Luis I bridge, the easiest way is from the Cathedral (Santa Marta do Porto), as it's a steep climb from Cais de Ribeira

Ribeira district is the riverfront of old town Porto which is right behind it in a maze of old narrow winding streets.
Ribeira is very popular with both, locals and tourists with many bars, restaurants, street performers,...etc. Walking it will reward you with great views of Douro and the iconic Dom Luis bridge. However, have in mind it's a high tourist area, so you can guess prices in establishments around are higher with lower service quality.
TIP: Great views of Ribeira district are from Vila Nova de Gaia right across or from the upper level of Dom Luis bridge.

This is totally the most touristic area to visit in Porto but don't avoid it for that reason. This is one of the best features of Porto. The surrounding areas are so beautiful and lively. It’s a great place for food, drink, boat trips, street performers and people watching with the magnificent bridge Dom Luis as backdrop. Prices here may be more than other less busy places in Porto but sometimes you need to pay for an unforgettable experience.
The atmosphere its simply great so don’t miss it!

It's very nice and lively, we stayed one weekday and there was a summer weekend animation of our own. Street musicians on every street corner, playing music with unusual virtuosity. There are also flea market stalls, where you can find the souvenirs at a better price than in the rest of the city. I recommend crossing the bridge Luis I and the side of Vila nova de Gaia, go to the house of the cod cake with sheep cheese, where for 10,00 euros you can enjoy the cake (very delicious) and a glass of port wine.

A walk along the riverbank is a must do for any visit to Porto. Restaurants, street performers and the boats that cruise along the river are all here. Great views of the city. You can cross the bridge by foot along the lower level and it is a short walk to the other side where the Calem porto caves and museum are located. .

My own view is that the Ribeira district is best enjoyed by simply wandering around without aiming for anything in particular. There are a number of narrow cobbled streets leading through the area, some lined with plants others with just houses and others with restaurants. The water front also has restaurants and near to the bridge various stalls selling linens of various sorts at extremely reasonable prices. A great place to while away two or three hours

take a stroll, cross the bridge, enjoy the sun. but otherwise, cais da ribeira sees the tourists coming. do not waste your money in the riverside restaurants as you are paying only for location. you will receive mediocre, overpriced food. if you want to stop to enjoy the view and a coffee, or cocktail, it is manageable but don't get carried away. if you are not into port wine, crossing the river is not for you as it is literally lined with one after another of the different brands of port wine cellars, and associated restaurants. if your goal IS to taste and experience, then it is definitely your cup of....port.

Each city has its iconic view and place which is associated with the city. For Porto this is - Riberia. Colourful houses, riverside, where you could have a boat trip and get familiar with bridges and city from the water. It is a real challenge to find an affordable restaurant here :)

Such a beautiful part of such a great colourful city.
Nothing like sitting outside on one of its bars with a nice glass of wine in the sunshine.
Great views are to be had from the river front looking to the bridge, river and cross the city.
Busy with plenty of atmosphere

Walked onto the Luis Bridge ( lower level) to get onto this Cais da Ribeira . This is definitely a touristy area but exciting at the same time time with the shops , live street performances, bustling river waterfront and many eateries + fancy restaurants. It’s a great place to sit and enjoy the Douro river views , the bridges view and sunset as you sip on some wine.
